  • Sewing banner tiles together

    Hi there…

I’ve just had a request for a very large banner. The client is looking for 10′ x 20′ (approx 3m x 6m) banner which will be attached to the side of a building for about one month. While we can handle a 72″ (1.83m) format that’s about as big as we go. Grand format suppliers really aren’t an option in my region so I’m thinking about having two tiles professionally sewn together and hemmed. Time lines won’t allow me to have it welded (no local welders).

My question is pretty much this; any general tips on doing this task? I know that I am going to have to use a white-block out banner so that the merged areas don’t look especially dark. Other than this, I can only think of a lot of stitching down the centre.

    Thanks in advance.

My cousing makes fabric Awnings. He has a sewing machine that’s set up to seam.
It keeps the material overlap uniform and runs two lines of stitching on the overlap as you go.
if there’s an awnig shop close by, they should be able to seam it for you rather quickly.

Don’t know if you have banner bond tape over there, it’s a very high strength double sided tape developed for banners, we get ours from B & P Lightbrigade, may be an option!

Thanks for the comments and ideas.

I’m ok with the sewing. I’ve got a guy who runs a professional machine with the walking needle and walking foot within throwing distance. Use him all of the time when taping won’t made the grade.

I guess looking back at my original post I was ever too vague. I was thinking more along the lines of what type of centre fold to use before sewing and what weights of banner material people thought could handle this. Of course, it’s entirely my bad for not being specific 🙂 Right now, it’s next to impossible to source anything heavier than a 13oz material a la Avery Jupiter.

Thank you again for the input.
