I just wondered how other sign businesses feel about fitting other peoples signs?

A typical scenario would be where you recieve a call asking if you can fit a set of vinyl lettering to a vehicle. The companies head office send out the vinyl kit and expect the local branch to fit these themselves. Not being confident to do this – the local branch calls you the local sign business and asks if you will fit the vinyl’s for them.

Personally I am fully occupied doing my own work (supplying and fitting signs we make ourselves) and resent being asked to fit someone else’s signs. Alison Say’s what’s your problem – providing you are being paid to do it.

I always feel is they want signs fitted, they should have asked us in the first place to supply the lettering also.

What are others views on this?

Hi, we fit other peoples’ graphics all the time what the main company is trying to achieve is two things
1 a uniform appearance throughout their fleet
2 a better price for bulk purchase
not many larger companies are prepared to pay for the same set of applicators to go all over the uk liverying their fleet and sometimes it is a matter of time ie corporate re-branding where the company may have 200 vehicles at 60 sites throughout the country but for reasons best known to themselves want all 200 vehicles changed between shutdown on friday and starting again on monday, so how else could you get round that many sites?.
The other thing is that if the graphics are supplied on a sub-standard material (sometimes 🙄 happens) make sure you point this out to your customer at the time and preferably get a signature to the same effect, as if the graphics fail at all it is ALWAYS the fitter that gets blamed.

We are more or less quite happy to fit other peeps signs …. as long as they are happy to pay the rate and provide everything in a professional manner, then its ok with us. Not had any bad experiences yet?

I get asked to fit signs that usually sign makers from the south have made for firms that have branches all over the country.

I have found that the signs are usually well packed but they sometimes forget to send the window graphics. They also want the job doing fairly quickly but aren’t so accommodating in paying up once i have sent my fitting bill.

All in all i am quite happy fitting other peoples signs so long as i check them 1st & so long as i don’t mind waiting a bit for payment.

I got started by fitting other peoples lettering, mainly to the ambulances that we build, few months back kept getting messed about so thought I would buy a cutter/plotter and have a go myself, great no more waiting , lettering there as and when I need it plus another string to my bow, now treating it as a second buisiness, Mark

    Its all I do
The main problems arise when the customer has surveyed the site themselves, then you get on site and measurements, materials etc are wrong and they have fabricated the sign to thier measurements.
always best to survey yourself then there is no-one else to blame. :headbang2:

Quite agree Dave, i forgot to mention that. Very important to do the site survey yourself, then if it doesn’t fit it’s your fault.

quite happy to fit other peeps signs, do a lot for bmw on the minis and it’s part if their warranty it would be more profitable to make and fit ,we have also fitted for others, we have also made signs for others to fit, maybe we are a bit more caring, we always supply as if we were going to fit, and make it easy some signs we have had to fit you look at and think how 🙄

We fit a lot of other peoples graphics. We make a lot of graphics for other people to fit. Sometimes we actually get to fit something we have made! 😀

I don’t have any hang-ups about fitting other peoples stuff, in fact it is good business as I have quite a few good clients who we originally started out fitting for, but when they were let down with supply once too often we managed to pick up that work as well.

Without boring you all with too much detail, single sourcing is the only way to go for a large company. Any other method causes too much aggravation and major expense further down the line. Believe me, I have seen it time and time again.
