will static cling stick properly to a car window?
Posted by Kate and Danny on 19 August 2005 at 09:54Hi
We have been asked by a local plumber to make some static cling decals for his back windscreen and rear windows. We have used the static cling before for making small window stickers, but we are unsure if the rear windscreen is too large for the static cling to stay on. And if it is suitable for a large area like this, is it going to look any good. We have been reverse laminating with single colour vinyl, but if this is applied to a large area will it look naff? will it look very bubbly?
any advice?! 😕

hi kate 😀
i do the reverse self-cling quite alot for backs of 4×4 windows and they look okay and they do stay on a larger window…i wouldnt laminate self-cling with vinyl..it will come off as it starts to warp around the edges and looks terrible 😀

a combination of both andy…depending on how large a run the job is 😀
screenprinting in reverse for larger runs and i tend to apply vinyl in reverse on clear only and on the front for white…your not really supposed to do it that way as the more vinyl you apply to the front obviously stops the cling sticking to the window…i do it according to the design 😀nik

Nik – I’ve just been asked today for red self cling signs with white text for a shop front. At the minute I don’t have sizes but I don’t expect them to be as small as a rear windscreen. I’ve never worked with this type of stuff before and don’t really know where to start. Who supplies it? Does it come in various colours and can I cut it like vinyl?

Hi Marcella
Most of the suppliers sell self cling, try the likes of hexis etc.
To my knowledge it only comes in white and clear but no doubt someone will correct me on that.
I have done quite a lot of stuff for shop windows and with a job like this I would normally just cut the text in reverse apply and then floodcoat with backing colour, in this case red.
You can cut self cling on a plotter you just need to experiment with speed and cutting force but if they are just rectangles you are cutting just as easy to do it with a straight edge and scalpel.

thanks Martin, that’s a great help. I’ve never used it before and wasn’t quite sure where to start. But that helps.

do you get good results martin? as i find the vinyl pulls on itself and makes the self-cling come away from the window, goes all crinkly round the edges and eventually it doesnt stick especially on large areas, just wondered 😀

Nik, I’ve never had a problem like that, I do tend to use a good vinyl so there isn’t a lot of shrinkage and I an very careful when applying the vinyl not to pull or stretch it.
I’ve got customers that have had these in their windows for at least 18 months without moving them and not had any problems. -
Can anyone point me in the direction of an “idiots guide to printing on static cling…..the methods and basic equipment” needed please?
regards

If you have a Gerber Edge, they have static cling for it. I’ve used it a lot.
I haven’t used it on another printer though, sorry.

Thanks Marek but I don’t think I could afford one(even if I knew how much one cost 😀 ), is there a cheaper (as in cheap) solution?

you wont get any cheaper than screenprinting self-cling 😀 i dont think theres any other way around it, especially if you dont want to upgrade to a suitable printer 😀

Andrew, they have self cling that can be printed on the solvent printers. May pay to subby the job to someone here?
Just a thought

I got some info on this just last week. Europoint do a self cling that can be digitally printed, called Ability cling (£130 for 20m @914mm wide). Or another suitable only for screenprinting that’s sold in sheets.
I found it cheaper to get a quote for a screenprinter to do it (depends on how many you need obviously). -
Hi
i have a static clean from Doro Tape that will go through my RockHopper 38 not really had a chane to play too much with it but you still need to back up with whiteKev
