    Brian,

If you are talking new vehicles, the different manufacturers use different waxes and you need to treat each individually.

As an example, most of them use hard waxes which need the right chemical to get them off, but Volkswagen use a soft wax which is best removed with paraffin.

Your best bet is to try to get the information from the manufacturer because in my experience even their dealers don’t know. That’s ideal, but it can be difficult/impossible getting to speak to someone who knows and you will probably end up, like we do, trying various things until you find something that works.

    Good luck.

PS. On VWs allow extra time to get it back to a surface you can work on. You will need it.

I’m not sure whether you are talking about getting the manufacturers protective transit wax off new vehicles, or just getting fingerprints and stuff off the paint before you apply vinyl in the ordinary way.

For everyday use, as a final prep, then yes, meths is fine in the vast majority of cases. We have used it every day for the last eighteen years without problems. In fact I am reluctant to change to anything else because I know it works.

On the other hand meths won’t touch the manufacturers protective wax. And even if it did it would be an expensive way of doing it! You need an appropriate chemical for that. If this is your problem, and you can’t get the information from the manufacturer, call in somebody like Autoglym and get their recommendation.

Most new vans come to us already de-waxed but for the odd few that don’t we will remove manufacturers wax with whatever chemical does the job then give the van a final prep with meths before applying vinyl. That normally does it, except for VW, where in between those two stages we will give the van a hard rubbing with paint thinners and not stop until the rag comes away white! VWs are pigs, which is strange, because Sprinters are fine.
