  • how can i attach destination boards onto vans?

Anybody got any idea on how to do this!

The brief from the client says…….

A destination board shall be provided enabling display from the front of the vehicle. It may be mounted internally of externally, but, it must not encroach into the swept area of the windscreen wipers. If externally mounted, the board shall be constructed in a weatherproof material and capable of containing printed text inserted in a suitable water resistant and sealed pocket. The display area shall be not less than 600mm x 125mm.

It will have to be external because there isn’t 600 x 125 unswept on a Berlingo.

This has got me foxed, so any suggestions will be gratefully accepted.

Any chance of making something like you see on lorries? Like a 3 sided frame that you can slot a rigid panel into. They use them to display hazardous substance info. Something magnetic on the bonnet……just thinking out loud.

I like the magnetic idea because it will conform to the shape of the vehicle, but I’ve still got to provide a waterproof pocket to put the printed text in.

    Keep going boys (and girls)

I have seen an A board with a magnetic clear cover to put posters in.
Would it be possible to make something similar. In effect a border of magnetic, stuck to a clear Panel.

would there be more then 3 destinations?
would there be any reason to consider LED box?

Use the reverse of the passenger sun visor.

Compromise on the size and it is the easiest solution.

Surely that would come within the area of the wipers, even though it is inside.

I like Lynn’s idea – a rectangle of magnetic with a letterbox cut out of it, with a thin clear panel bonded to the face. This would give a ‘hollow’ deep enough for a thin insert, as long as the insert was thinner than the magnetic material (0.85mm).

    Do that, John. Go on.

I’m going to go with magnetic.

It will have to be a magnetic sheet with magnetic strips around the edge to give it a bit of depth, and a clear acrylic on top. The reason is that with a backing the paper strip can be insterted indoors then the whole thing taken outside and slapped on the van. That’s the only way I can see of keeping the paper dry on a wet day.

    1. LED box will be too expensive. Plus I would have to make brackets to fit a rectangular box on a curved body panel. Drilling holes in bodywork is to be avoided. Could I even get five hundred light boxes in a hurry?

    2. The sun visor was my first idea but as Andy says, it comes within the swept area of the wipers, and the end user will not compromise on size.

We do get some odd requests. Thanks for the input folks.

not to change the subject too much here but you say the swept area of the windscreen ! did you know it is illegal to have anything on the front windscreen of a motor vehicle apart from the tax disc!
Our local Vauxhal dealer will now fail cars on the MOT with a air frehener hanging from the interior mirror 😥 or like the boy racers like those big vinyl sunvisor the same colour as the car across the top of the windscreen ALL Illegal ! 🙄
