    Hello All

I have only recently started doing larger signs for shopfronts etc, but wondered how you actually price it….
Previously I kind of tried avoiding larger signs. My husband fits them for me (he’s a carpenter by trade). He has kindly just been fitting them for love rather than money, and as a result I think I have been far too cheap.

Do you give a price for the sign, and a seperate price for installation based on an hourly rate?

Obviously there will come a time when he will need help to install a sign – I can charge installation based on the rates my husband usually charges, but I don’t know if it’s the right sort of price for fitting signs. I don’t want to lose jobs through over-pricing, but at the same time I don’t want to be too cheap – especially if I have to then weigh out for my husbands work partner as well…..

Any advice would be greatly appreciated…….

    Thanks

    Ali

    Hi,
I always quote 2 prices, supply only and fitted.
With the fitting we work on a minimum 1 hr @ £25 per man. then depending on how long it would take we then tell the customer a maximum it would be. so they know it could be anywhere between the two..
not sure if this will help.
    Cheers

    Thanks Ian

I was thinking something exactly along those lines, so you’ve put my mind at rest!

I usually provide 2 quotes on signs that I am sure that the customer could install themselves if they wish, but on larger more complicated signs, I quote the job complete/installed. And as far as pricing the installation, if it is within a few miles or so from my shop, I figure on a 4′ X 8′ sign on posts a minimum of $50 for install, which usually takes less than an hour.

I hire my uncle to help me on larger installations and usually just ask him how much money he needs to do the job, which you could probably do also with your husband before you provide a quote. You will often run into complications when installing and you should always take this into consideration, as I learned the hard way. You may think it will be a quick and easy install and end up working on it all day! Price accordingly by figuring that a certain percentage of your installs will be like this and you should be fine. Good luck
