  • Banner Vinyl Lifting

Posted by Tim Painter on 19 July 2005 at 11:33

Fitted a 12′ x 3′ Total block banner a week ago and the vinyl is lifting within a week and client not happy. It spans between a balcony and a lamp post and is fitted to steel cable. The banner is not stretched so this I don’t believe has caused any problems.

Vinyl was Mactac banner vinyl fitted dry, banner was cleaned prior to fitting.

The client wishes to re use the banner and strip it once a month.

What I am trying to establish is from your guys years of experience. Is it likely to be the vinyl (poor batch) ? The temperatures we have had? or what?

Would very very much like some feedback on this.
Also what other banner vinyls are available (other than Mactac) and is there a brand which is anyone swears bye??

    Many Thanks
    Tim.

    Tim,

We have had this problem. I didn’t delve in to it too deeply but in the end we put it down to using banner vinyl that had been in stock for too long. We re-did them in new vinyl and the problem did not recurr.

    Thanks fro the prompt response.

Vinyl was only ordered in a week ago, but how long has it been since manufacture I guess.

I have never ever had a problem with Macsoft until now – maybe a bad batch it does happen – Just got to see now if my vinyl supplier will see it that way…… 🙁

It is my understanding that banner vinyl has a shorter shelf life so I try to keep banner stock to a minimum, difficult to know how long the supplier has had it though especially some of the more obscure colours.

Did you thoroughly clean the banner before application? Plasticiser migration can cause this problem particularly if the banner material has been on the shelf a while. Interestingly the only couple of times I have had this problem, it was with Mactac vinyl.

Did you clean it with IPA? Soapy water?

I think John is probably on the money with the age of the material, but if you didn’t clean it with IPA or meths for the final clean, it could still have cleaning residue that is, in effect, a greasy surface, causing it to lift.

I don’t like mactac, so I have never used it. Never had oracal banner vinyl fail, ever.

    Cheers

Did thoroughly clean the banner surface & remove any residue from cleaning fluid. I always make sure of this to avoid such problems.
Banner was new and had a nice surface.

Vinyl Supplier ( Cherwell Sign Supplies) are sending me some more Vinyl FOC and are having a look into the age of the stock they supplied. I can’t fault them on customer service on this.

    Tim.
