Dibond and Pizza Ovens!
Hi Guys and Gals
My local chippie asked me to do a blackboard for their ‘Specials’ and the only place in a crowded shop where it could go was above the Pizza Oven (situated in a wall). Rather naively I slapped a bit of blackboard vinyl onto foamex and put it on the wall above the oven. As you will have probably figured out, it bent up like a banana in no time at all!
My question is simple, if I put the blackboard vinyl onto a substrate like dibond, will it do the same? Perhaps I will need to put a heat deflecting shelf under the sign first or maybe I’ll have to use aluminium instead? Any suggestions gratefully received.

I would have thought that being above the ovens, all that heat and steam, the vinyl will lift off the diabond anyway, Not sure what the answar is without looking to be sure.. sorry

No steam as such, just can get a bit hot when they open the oven door to put in and take out Pizza’s. I guess I’m asking how does dibond cope with a bit of heat? Cheers

Not sure mate, when i worked for Oldham Signs, They had a big machine that rolled dibond into a half tube shape for BP garages, i pretty sure it was heated, and when it came out the other side the dibond would hold the shape.. Sorry, i can’t be more helpful, see if you can get hold of a bit and test it in situate for a bit to see what happens

Hi Mate, I put a tester peice in a powder coating oven, heated it up too a real high temperature and it did not budge, you should not get any problems from dia-bond/rynobond.
The problems with making any signage out of PVC foamboard is the substrate is full of tiny air pockets, as this heats up the air inside expands causing the warping.

don’t listen to me , as i know nothing….
looks like the substrate issue maybe sorted , just the vinyl prob…
could you use the vinyl just as a template (weed out the letters) , then use a good spray paint maybe…..

In reference to the vinyls, speak to the supplier and see if the adhesive and vinyl has a safe working temperature. I would suggest this as the best way forward. If the vinyl your using is capable of withstanding a good heat source you should be fine.
For instance oracle 751 film show this…
adheared to aluminium at -50c to +90c no variation, for short periods (24h) 100c

Thanks Folks,
I shall try a test piece for a few days, the heat is just for a few seconds at a time (oven door opening and shutting) so should be Ok on the Dibond.
