  • help please fixing 5mm foamex panels to GRP trays

Can anyone help me to help a friend?
Thankfully this isnt my problem but a friend of mine whos just started his own business has fallen into a heap of trouble.
Basically he has had a job which entailed fixing 5mm foamex panels to GRP trays that were already in existence. The customer wanted no fittings to be visible so he contracted a sign company to fit these foamex panels for him. They used double sided tape and the up shot is that the new panels fell off in about 1 month. He now has an angry customer who wants this put right. I am no wizz when it comes to fitting, but suggested he use alupanel or something similar as I didnt think 5mm foamex was suitable. The sign size is 4m x 800mm deep, the new panels are in 2 off 2m x 800mm pieces. Does anyone know what to use to fix these panels to the existing GRP panels without showing any rivets, screws etc. He’s on site now and in a panic! :lol1:

I would think the tape is failing to stick to the GRP. Any decent d/s tape will stick to foamex no problem. He needs to source an adhesive that is suitable for GRP. I get mine from a local caravan builder. Other than that, were the surfaces nice and clean….? Or maybe the expansion has forced the panel away from the tape. The way around this is to return the panels to the bench and make some interlocking hanging strips for the back. Glued to the foamex, screwed to the GRP and then one hooks into the other.

    Any good?

That sound good! Not sure if he has the facilities to do the fabrication work as the company who hung the signs have refused to re hang them. Any idea what sort of double sided tape would stick to GRP or who I can get him to ring for advice.
Thanks for the quick response! I said I would ring him back shortly !

Might be simpler to get some contact adhesive spray, and stick them back up. Not the way I would do it, but he doesn’t want to end up with a huge bill.

    Best of luck to him.

Long story really Peter, the guy used to work for the sign co who fitted it, and left to start up on his own, thought theyd got over their differences but perhaps not. My friend now makes signs but is clueless how to fit them, hence the problem.
Anyway I will pass on the info and let him sort it out, thanks for all the help, much appreciated. :lol1:

not sure evostick will work?? we used to do quite a lot of GRP, and i know it was a pain to get stuff to stick to it, look up GRP on the net for a company that produce’s it, and ask them what to use….
    Or what about locators??

would white VHB tape not work? run round parimetre of sign then at verticle angles on rear. before applying score criss-crosses on foamex and grp with a stanley knife then press into place. once snugg as a bug, heat panel with heat gun gently to help adhession on the rear.
foamex will work but ide have used dibond or something similar.

I would think that good vhb would work. You have two potential problems here, the foamex expading and ocntracting and the grp prone to gassing like acrylic (you need to clean plastic surfaces thoroughly and use ipa immediately before gluing otherwise the plastic gases and affects stickyness) best to use a non hardening glue we use permtac which sticks pastic to foamex to to ally etc but there are other adhesives similar
