  • why does application tape tear near the end of a roll?

Posted by Simon Kay on 28 June 2005 at 09:36

My application tape gets all gooey about 10mm from the end. It tears near the edge all the time which is not insurmountable but a pain in the b*m.
Does it happen to you lot in colder climates or is it just in warmer climates (we can go from 12 degrees overnight to 45 degrees during the day in the summer and 0 degrees to high 20’s in the winter).
It’s no big deal but I was just wondering.
I think I involved myself too much in another thread so I’ll start this one here 😉
Moans, groans and gripes about application tape please. :lol1:

Talking about moans and groans regarding application tape, my main gripe is that once I start to get near the end of a roll it becomes very difficult to get off the roll unless you have muscles like popeye! Anyone else had this problem?
Sorry I havent had any problems like yours scozzie, it might well be the temp variation.

Scozzie, not had the gooey problem but the edge tearing 👿 , this seems to be due to the roll being pinched at the edge during transport/cutting or packaging, as when the edge is nice and square it don’t get it.

Jem, I know what you mean, I usually leave the last bit just for small graphics as the tape stretches so much trying to get it off it can lead to problems on larger stuff(Conform Tape).

    Cheers

    Dave,
I went back to normal application tape after trying conform as I found it too stretchy and I was having problems keeping lines of lettering straight when applying some jobs. unless I hinged every word from the top, it would stretch so much that lines of lettering were likely to go slightly off skew.

Once you apply yourselves you’ll find that adhering to the thread is no bother at all. 😀 😉

Paper application tape only has a shelf life of 6 months , after this the adhesive begins to emulsify which makes it very difficult to pull away from the roll , the adhesion value drops significantly aswell so it will struggle to lift the letters. Because its a paper liner air can get to the adhesive which dries it out causing this problem.

    Hi Cammy
I think a sign maker that can keep a roll of app tape for 6 months must be on holiday 😛

A sad story to tell 😥 when we first started we bought a roll of app tape at 1220 and had it cut into rolls starting at 1″ 2″ you can imagine the rest needless to say most got binned several years later our suppliers must have thought we were nuts ( they have since found out we are 🙄 )

I have found that it is best to keep the tape in a box away from the light-I am sure that UV affects the glue and dries out the ends. Also, I sometimes put a scrap piece of app tape over the end of the roll to try and keep the air away from the exposed end.

I have had this problem of the tape tearing away from the ends, and it is very frustrating. It does help if you have a proper dispenser- I bought a lovely one from Germany that glides the tape out beautifully.

    Hey Lynn,

How did you know that’s exactly what we did. 😀

The roll I’m talking about was the longest of a cut up into smaller rolls selection. Went over to see through plastic stuff and now we’re trying to use up the old paper stuff.

Cammy thanks for the explaination. It makes perfect sense, and is infact exactly what is happening.

    hey scozzie,
expect it’s what we all do when we start without guidance and all the awful colour vinyls you get to put on the shelf!!! not even thinking that a big burly builder is not going to go for pink or teal on his van 😛

whats wrong with pink & teal – we used to do laundry fleet, clean linen services down marlow way – their livery was…..pink and teal!

Actually I can think of a burly local builder who may go for just those colours. 😀

Pink and teal is a very popular combination with my clients too… perhaps I should be worried?

touch wood, i’ve had no problems, as such, with the perfect tear 75 i’m using now, tho in the last day or two (as i’m now on the lasy 5 mtrs or so) i have noticed that the glue is getting a little tacky when removing it from the graphic,

the application clear tape i had before was awful, it was hard to get off the roll, and as a result it would stretch, leave the decal rolled in a tube for a day or two and it’d be wrinkled to death as the tape had shrunk !

i’ve just ordered some own brand perfect tear ‘equivelent’, cheap and their most popular brand, i oughta be good or it’ll be on ebag cheap at the end of the month !

btw, my tape lasts me ages, call me tight if ya will, but if i’m covering a 400 wide graphic, on 600 backing, i’ll cover the lot and then slice off the large excess, i never need to mess about when it comes to covering one off little decals then, i have a little bit of tape to use instead of using a whole width !

i know, i should buy different widths !
