Hi everyone, haven’t been around for a while do to relocating my workshop. Anyway as usual I could do with your advice on the following project.

I need to know which trade suppliers can supply Dibond style sign trays with cutouts for lettering fixed to prismatic diffusers. (PM the info if you prefer)

The client is watching his budget and would ideally like an illuminated sign done this way, but he hasn’t yet obtained planning permission.
I suggested I could supply the sign front ready to take illumination, so that he could later upgrade once he gets permission. Is this a good idea or would there be problem aplenty when upgrading?

The other option he wants is just for raised acrylic letters fixed directly to the sign tray. Whats the best way to fix acrylic directly to dibond?

    Thanks, Peter.

Hi Peter, still doing okay i hope?

You can attach standard raised letters to the tray using locators, as you have done before, or you could use VHB tape if they need to be flat to the surface.

The trays don’t need to be Dibond, you could get aluminium machined and folded to form a tray, you could fix a slimline illuminated box first and then the tray can fit over the front until the planning is achieved by the customer.

    Just an option mate,

    Mike

    Hi Mike,
good to hear from you, thanks for your help with that last project by the way, as always you came through for me in fine style.

Locators are out on this project, the VHB may be a possiblity but I rejected it in my own mind because I couldn’t see how to get a quality finish, unless VHB is available in wide rolls? Then I could place the letters directly onto the tape and cut around each one individually. Then place them on the flat sheet.

Any suppliers to recommend for the lightboxes Mike?

    Thanks for the feedback,

    Peter

    Peter,
The VHB would be fine, even in the 25mm strips, if you clean the surface as recommended.
I presume they are not going to be huge in height.

There are plenty on the boards who have been recommended for light boxes before Peter, Alutrade are a good option in Birmingham.
I either do my own boxes or buy local, i also get my ali trays fabricated locally so if you get stuck just give me a shout with the details.

    Cheers Peter,

    Mike

Sorry to jump in Peter, but I was just wondering where Mike got his Ali profiles from to build up light boxes, I would like to do them myself too.

Hope the new workshop works out Peter, I am hoping to move soon too.

I was wondering why the locators are not possible for this job Peter, as I always think letters look better standing off from the facia?

    Cheers

    Dave

    Hi Dave,
A local company called Brownings Plastics, Amari and Alutrade all stock profiles for sign boxes/cases.

How to stick acrylic to aluminium, use Permtac, sticks all plastics to all metals. If you want ot use stand offs attach stand ofs to acrylic using Fusion and then use Permtac to attach other end of stan of to aluminium

Re illumination at a later date

Buy sign tray from ashby and ask them to fret cut to your drawing then glue sheet of acrylic to inside, take sign tray off and then put neon or flourescent tubes behind to illuminate, cheap as chips.

    Regards Adrian
