• Running costs ?

Posted by advancedgraphics on 15 June 2005 at 12:36

I’m on the final leg of whether to invest in digital print or not.
Ive been reading some interesting stuff on here, and now i’m coming to the crunch.

Can anyone shed any light as to the costs of ink to print, with a digital print machine ?

On both Eco Solvents & Light Solvent or eve pure solvent,
this will give me an idea as to what the best investment will be.

For example, would anyone know the average ml useage of each colour on a photo printed at 300 dpi per square meter ?
This is one of the trickiest aspects of how much this whole thing will cost, so any help from you guys who are making your bread from running these machines would be extremely helpful.

Again, i thank all for their input on my past posts
    Regards

    Chris

at full colour, highest resolution with full solvent machine your looking at about £6 or so per square metre. you obviously still have vinyl cost on that. costs dont stop there… does it need laminated, the time it takes to setup artwork, and of course depending on the machine, the time it takes to print. most overlook printing time as a cost but once your busy you will be cursing it to hurry up.
    i run solvent grenadier.

    thanks for that, much appreciated.
The jury is still out on whether we jump or not.

I’ve calculated ink cost between cassette changes and agree with Rob at £6 per sq m on our Cadet using full price cartridges.

In addition to items mentioned allow for a fair amount of wasted print particularly when the machine is new and you are getting used to it.

Don’t underestimate the learning curve on digital print either. It will take over your life and production time for quite a while. You need to evaluate which materials you like, get decent ICC profiles, learn the RIP etc.

Of course, if you do get any problems with the printer (see my other posts!) you will spend your time getting your supplier to fix them!!!

The best bit comes, as in other types of signs, when the customer says “that looks bloody good”.
