Having recently ventured into fitting signs as opposed to just supplying them , we are not experienced in choice of materiels and fixing methods.
We have been asked to provide a 16′ x 4′ sign and fit it to the gable end wall of a shop building. We first thought of using Dibond and screwing it directly to the wall using screws and rawl plugs and plastic caps. However ,the wall is a little bowed and we don’t want the join between the two sheets to show.We thought about using a timber frame behind the Dibond to enable the imperfections of the wall to be avoided but to be honest we are unsure whether this is normal practice. Another option was to use 10mm Foamex , again screwed directly to the wall , but we don’t know how this will react to the sunlight with regards to expansion. Ideally we would use 5mm Foamex in a sign frame but the customer didn’t really like the idea.
Does anyone have any thoughts on either of our methods ?
    What do you suggest ?
    Cheers

I’d use a signframe designed for 5mm panels.

Why doesn’t your customer like this idea?

I think he likes the idea of the sign blending into the wall like the old style painted gables . However if the methods I described are un workable , I may have to convince him . I wouldn’t want the boards to warp or crack

    A timber batton frame of 2″ x 1″ (50mm x 25mm) would help
A few wedges to nip behind the frame where the undulations are more pronounced

Of course make sure you have a batton in the frame for the butt
Once you have the frame on the wall it will be easy work screwing the panel to the wood instead of to the wall

Bear in mind that the overall sign will protrude some 25mm +
