Posted by Clive Darbon on 5 May 2005 at 09:42

Hi and thanks in advance. Anybody got any tips of the best way/product for cleaning old glue residue left on vehicles after removing vinyl? Have used petrol in the past Ok but don’t like storing it, also had some expensive chemical that was rubbish can’t remember the name. Cheers

Benziene or a citrus oil based cleaner should do it.
    Neither will damage paints
You could also try a tar remover and get hold of one of the spray paint guys and ask them what they use.

Thanks for that. By tar remover do you mean something like jizer?

I use a decal remover made in Canada that I buy in a spray can at an auto parts chain, it’s called “Sticker and Decal Remover” haha.
    Or try Goo Gone.
Or Rapid Remover, made by Rapid Tac products.
And use a L’il Chizler with all of the above,
or one of those plastic razor blades from an auto parts store.
You have to leave any of these soak on the glue till it forms a snotty boogery substance.
    It’s not fun.

The “lil chizler” is a little scraping tool that slightly resembles a sgueegee. It is “lil” and plastic.
I used to always use “Rapid Remover” but I don’t like how greasy it is and sometimes it just seems to make more of a mess than anything else. We have some 3M adhesive remover that comes in aeresol form that has been working pretty good. It is citrus based so you don’t have to worry about getting high using it.

Yeh – the 3m Citrus stuff is what I was talking about , it also removes a lot of other gunk (wood resin smoke from lasered stuff , lasered vaporised residue , tar , digital prints on vinyl , khoki pen marks etc) and if you getting hot and smelly it does great double duty as a deodorant 🙂

Thanx folks I’ll try ’em all! Actually, I also inherited this stuff from a shop fitting mate of mine – it’s made by Wurth (Netherlands) has no English on the tin but it translates to ‘Industrial Clean’ and is in an aerosal. When sprayed it smells ‘orangy’ so it might be the same as the 3m stuff?

At this very minute I am covered from head to toe in a snotty boogery substance using Right-Off from Doro Tape.

Anyway, must go, before I drip the said snotty boogery substance all over my keyboard which would make it impossible to tTYPP e pROpppp e r Lyy.

This is a sticky subject when it comes to glue or snotty boogery stuff

I’ve used the special glue removing stuff and it has actually ruined the substrate and created more mess

The other day I used ordinary Turpentine Substitute with remarkable results. Its not that expensive either (not like the £45 + vat specialisd rubbish)

Last month a customer, showed me a second hand van he had purchased and removed the vinyl ready for his “new design” ……………….

No turps or tar removed needed and definitely no snottery boogery stuff left……… and not a lot of paint ………he had decided to use a sander!
