  • Summa DC3 – Do you own one??? feedback on it please!

    Hi, here’ me again.

As some of you have already read, I have a PC600, but I am thinking of getting a Summa DC3…the reason is because I need a machine that can print “white” and I believe the only Thermal printers can do it right now, and I need it to print/cut.
So although the DC3 is only 36″ it is wide enough for what I do.
How good are the prints??? is it easy to maintanance?? how about the print head…have you replaced?? how long have you had it working w/ the same head.
Please give some feedback on this printer…thanks,

    Alex

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for the info…it would really be nice to see a inkjet that can print white on a variety of vinyls…
I know that Roland just came out with its newest printer the Soljet 545 that can print white, but it will only print white on clear vinyl, which ins’t exactly what I need. Perhaps other members know more about it.
    Thanks Peter.

We have just bought a a DC3, i’ll let you know how it goes!

First problem is sourcing optically clear, non-polyester vinyl for vehicle windows.

I have contacted 3M, Avery, Oracal, Mactac & Grafityp today with no luck.

    Paul.

I thought it was a plane as well Peter. The printer i saw printing white at the show actually printed the colour picture 1st then went over it again printing white over the top!

The Summa DC3 is a Thermal Transfer Printer! That is why it can print white. It uses about a 3″ wide ribbon (have to double check the size) and uses a 40″ wide substrate.

It is Print and cut, again not at the same time. The issues I hear with this machine is that you have to use a 40″ wide substrate on it. Which is the most common complaint I hear about this device.

    I hope this helps.

ahh. thats exactly what would be great… do u remember if the machine was small/UV?
The Mimaki JV3 was promoting white ink made by Mimaki but all the RIP vendors were trying to work out how their RIP software would work.

Not sure what the latest is now

Sorry Dave I remember it was one of the last printers i saw at the end of the day so I didn’t have time to look at it properly.
