  • What would you do to this caravan?

Posted by Peter Normington on 4 May 2005 at 20:01

I have a friend who is a true romany. he wants this 1920’s caravan enhancing, any ideas or volunteers! Im not a brushy, and would’nt want to spoil this with vinyl. The pic below is an older caravan, just restored.

If old George thought you called it a cart, he would be most offended!

That would be such a fun job!
Are you close enuff to one of the painters on here to refer them?
Make sure old George pays up front,
I did a trailer for a gypsy one, he watched me all day,
smelled like a rotten taco, and paid me all in ones.
He even tried to cheat me out of $1!
I like the top one & it could look very good if it was done right.
Really, Peter, if you purchased a few hand-rendered fonts
and used the right colors, it could be done in vinyl & nobody would be able to tell.

    Jill,
this geezer is a diamond, done work for him before, and known him and his family for years. He it a true Gypsy/traveller/showman.
He is 70, still works for an honest living, and payment is not a prob, He dosnt want words on it, just some sort of design in the panels that run down the middle, In gold preferably.

I do like the style etc of the traditional one, all the scrolls, swirls etc is like the old barge boats but the top… 😕 well like nik has said about cartoony, ide end up putting “NODDY” along the side… :lol1:

im with you on the vinyl thing though…
we had 2 ice cream vans to do a few years ago, no matter what we did in vinyl “to me” just didnt look like an ice cream van… 😀

Don’t know if you can see it in the pic but all the scroll work is carved , made in doncaster from a single tree!

If you know a carver, or can carve,
SignFoam is easy to carve and very easy to work with.
Carve a large central ornament and one small one.
You can buy a casting compound called Smooth-On.
Make castings of your carvings and then surface gild and apply with 2-sided tape.
    OR
Buy a roll of SignGold, most come with a VectorArt CD for an additional fee of $5, get an ornament from there, cut out of florentine, and then hand-outline with black paint.
George sounds like a cool old dude.

    Peter,
I like Jills’ suggestions. Sign Gold, ornamental scrolls, hand outline in black. It would look awesome on that paint.

Peter, Don’t put a scrap of vinyl on this classic.
I’ve painted a lot of Pony Traps, Vintage Vehicles and Narrow-boats
A caravan from this period would have had each panel pinstriped around the edges in the cream colour used for the roof (or for less of a contrast, maybe a red tone to suit the background), a scroll pattern down the centre in Gold or Cream outlined and shaded in Black. And don’t forget those Mudguards !!.
Your friend would probably like his Initials interlinked in the centre of a Silver Horseshoe or Belt and Buckle formed into a circle all fine detailed with black. (these are used a lot by showman)

Why don’t you just use paint mask vinyl, do a scrolly type design and paint through the mask with gold enamel? Maybe just the cowards way out and cheating, but hell, it’d get the job done in a couple of hours. It would be painted, not vinyl.

I’m already running Jill, you’ll never catch me 😛 You’ll have to teach me to paint while I there… years of experience in just 3 days :lol1:

Dewie, thats a good suggestion, will give it some thought, only thing that might give me a problem is the van has just been hand painted, and Would need to dry off for a while before putting mask on it.

Is it metal? You could always try that thin magnetic paper from Bisbell (think thats what they’re called, have BisMark in my head for some reason, but sure its Bisbell 🙄 )

The paint mask stuff is very cool though, I’ve used it a couple of times now. I learnt pretty quickly though to get it off when the paint was still wet, as Jill was telling me at the time, as it removes the paint you’ve just done when its dry 🙁

Be a cool project though, would love to see it when its completed! 😀

    Cheers, Dewi

Masking it is great if your not to happy about doing it freehand,Peter.
Watch that paint though, I’ve wrecked a few home painted vans even with red low tack. The owner will alway’s swear he preped it 100% and is the best paintwork you’ll ever work on …..blah, blah, blah. With a mask on you can add some depth to the scrolls with some airbrushed shading, won’t take long but looks effective.
You can even mask the pinstriping with red low tack (from Handovers),
stop short of the corners by about 30mm, then join up freehand with a quarter circle. Have a crack at it, wipe it off if your not happy.
My workshop is in Hertfordshire, if you want to pass the work on my contact details are on my home page http://www.hertfordsigns.co.uk

You can get pinstriping tape from Handovers too
Just finished painting a double pinstripe one side of a Jaguar freshly sprayed

Little trick with low tack tape (as Mick will know) if you suspect the substrate: run your finger very quickly down the adhesive side. It’ll take the sharp ‘grab’ out the tape so that it doesn’t pull too hard on the soft newly painted surface

You can also gild with a mask.
Make sure to cut a thinnish outline around your emblem, then peel out the outline after applying your size.
This way you don’t get a sharp edge.
Then you can gild to your heart’s content.
(I’d use patent cuz loose leaf would surely blow away outside)
I’d be real leery of masking this sucka tho, if it was hand painted.
Altho the outline you’ll add later might cover the peeled up spots….

Thanks to Peter for passing the job on.
Decided to coachline in cream , Scroll in Metallic Brass with blackoutline.
No masks or layout drawings, just straight off the brush.
This customer really was a genuine guy and has great collection of carts, Lorries and Musical Organs.
There is quite a lot more work coming starting with an “old organ” in a few
weeks. Many thanks again to Peter.

    Excellent work Mike

    really cool stuff
I know what you mean by straight from the brush
Mind you I would have quickly marked in the flourishes with chalk first

Last thing I did like this was a pony trap some years ago. As you can imagine we don’t get a lot of call for this kind of work in Central London :lol1: Just to prove the point I’m off to Burlington Arcade tomorrow (just off Picaddily). Really posh place. What am I going to do there? Stick vinyl on the window! 😀

Thanks for all the compliments. I have’nt been a member long , but have found the people on here not only friendly, but constructive and interesting.
John, would be handy to have your contact details as I work mostly in the West End and City, and sometimes get double booked. If your in Picadilly tomorrow, see if you can find ‘ Cotswold Outdoor Clothing ‘ opposite Waterstones ,and Fortnum and Masons and you see some rough old timber panels that a Designer thought was a good surface to write on. I did it they, loved it and I went off shaking my head.
Jill, thanks for comments , I have seen some of your design work elsewhere on the forum and you have a real eye for layout. I will post some work on ‘Show us your stuff’ ,as it is a bit quite in here compared to the other forums. Do you know of source for scroll designs, as I would use masks more often but cannot find many to cut from on my plotter.

Mick, the Vector Art Mega Collection has tons of scrolly things.
    It’s a bit pricey tho.
I believe it is owned by Roland, and you used to be able to download vector images from their site on a pay per piece basis.
I dunno if you still can tho.
I sometimes draw something on (a4 ? I think!) paper, then scan & vector it myself to use as a pattern or mask.
The old books like Atkinson & Strong have some cool flourishes & stuff.
As a painter, I love to see the type of work that you did.
    Please put some more up!
And get thee to a Letterhead meet whenever you can!
Do you by any chance know my friend Arthur Vanson, from Bucks Signs in Buckinghamshire, Chesham? (hope I got the order right)
    He’s a traditional painter too.
    He’d love your work.
    Love….Jill
