Tomorrow I take delivery of a brand new Versacamm. Unfortunately I have been informed upon delivery the machine will just be assembled and left as it is, the supplier having told us commissioning and training will have to wait for 3 weeks.

As you can imagine I am loathe to leave an expensive machine just sat there not earning money and gathering dust. I currently use FlexiSign Pro and wondered how hard it could be to setup and print, (the supplier has told us it is complex and you need to get codes and information online from Japan).

Is all this true, or will the Versacamm run straight out of the box?

I don’t like the sound of that.

I don’t have one but I imagine you should be able to get printing straight away with the training just helping set it up properly and tweak for best results.

Don’t know about the versacam set up, but it may affect warranty if the supplier does do not commission it. Did you know about the delay in set up when you signed up? If not I would tell them to cancel delivery or not accept delivery, until they commission it, and also not pay or start paying until it is up and running.

so because he cant give you training you have to pay three weeks finance to watch the machine gather dust? how about charging him storage until he reads his books?

I didnt know about the delay when it was ordered but they have said they will not invoice until the end of the month. The printer is part of a package deal with SignLab (a program we do not currently use), I assumed any setting up and training would be to do with this, not the actual printer itself.

The reason SignLab is included is because it is already setup with profiles for the various substrates and it has the ability to create new ones.

We use the Flexi 7.5 on the Mac and it is unreliable to put it mildly.

sign lab should not need any codes or whatever on line, that you couldnt get yourself. Im sure that if you read the manuals with the printer, and install signlab according to the instruction there is no reason why you can’t be printing tommorrow.
If the training was fixed for a date and the printer arrived early then thats not the suppliers fault.

You should be able to print out the box with just about any package – Corel etc – the versacam comes with a RIP called Colorip (or if its a V model , Versaworks) It’s free with the machine and must be included.
Where you might have problems is the initial charging of the ink lines etc , but the manual has pretty good instruction on how to set up the machine.
You can download the manual at the roland site under support (look for your machine under print and cut products)
    http://www.rolanddga.com
You can also join the inkjet user forum and register as a poster by suppling the forum moderator you serial no and read prior posts or ask questions that the real experts can answer.

The Roland supplied RIP (colorip is actually a version of Wasatch softrip on steroids) is one of the best out there and there are zillions of profiles and you can tweak em all. What works for vinyl cutting is not the same for digital printing and in fact its not an easy transition to digital printing from vinyl cutting – the only “easy” bit is when you use the Versacam as a cutter – you make the money from printing , not cutting and thus should use a package that allows you to manipulate raster and vector images with the most flexibility. We do direct ink printing on flatbeds , digital print and cut with a soljet , thermal print with a roland Pc60 and photo and certificate printing with a canon i9950 and find a cheap program like Corel 11/12 more than adequate for this as well as using it as a design front end for our laser engravers and overhead routers and smaller engravers.
I have signlab (ver 5) and think it’s brilliant for the back end to our engravers etc (for tool paths and some other stuff) – but wouldnt use it for my printers.

    Max,
I set up and had the vc working in a morning, its very straight forward to put together.

I bought my machine direct from Roland, Roland wanted another £450 to have an engineer deliver and fit machine so i did it my self.

If you have paid for installation then dont touch it, if not ask for a discount and do it your self

we bought a versacamm from roland and once it had been ordered we took delivery within a few days and it was commisioned 2 days later by a roland chappy who also gave us a half days training.

it also didn’t cost us anything for this service, but it was mentioned when we agreed a delivery date that they MUST commision it, simple to someone who knows how, but i wouldn’t touch it at all, big regrets if it all goes pear shaped.

    cheers
