u have done a good few cement mixers now and never had any probs, having said that i am sure they were painted. if you have acid cleaned ide think them as silver/metal? if so, is it a new mixer? or is the metal worn and matt finish too it?
if so it maybe the matt finish thats causing this. have you tried a cast vinyl?
if it is metal and you were fitting in cold weather then that would be another issue. large trcuks like this fitted in the cold are a nightmare.

I would mask the drum and roll it with lettering enamel that has hardener added to it.
Vinyl is not a good choice as these things are cleaned with acids, and the
stuff in the cement is also corrosive.
I bid on cement trucks last year in which the drum was painted & the doors vinylled.
If you can cut vinyl you can cut a mask.
Then just roll it with a foam roller.
Or make a transparency & project it onto the drum & paint it
with a good cutter. Much cheaper than vinyl or a mask and it will stick!
    Love…..Jill

    Thanks
It not new, freshly painted about 2 months ago, but used on sites since

Do you think I should ask them to re-spray it and then heat it and apply vinyl?
Have had no problems in the past with new or freshly sprayed drums
Another signmaker told me it was the kind of surface that was the problem and a high gloss finish would be the answer
Truck is rented so signwriting it on is not an option

Is it because the surface is rough like sand paper??
If that’s the case, lay the vinyl, rubbing with a cloth rather than squeegee, then heat vinyl until it is really quite soft and rub with cloth again..?? that should get it into all the little pits holes etc

Claire, before you do anything else, I think that robs post held the answer,
cold! I have done loads of mixers and tankers, because of the large thick metal expanse that is enclosing a large area of cold air, no matter how you wipe the surface, a layer of condensation immiediatly forms on the surface. stopping the vinyl from sticking. Mixers must be done only in warm non humid conditions. If in can’t be put indoors overnight do it after in has stood in the sun till early afternoon.
