Anyone done silver, laquered, curtain side trailers? We have been painting curtain siders for years with Sericol inks and never had a problem. The thing is we did a silver, laquered trailer 2 years ago and it is peeling in places and looks bad.

We have another one to do soon and although the customer has not mentioned the problem with the other one, I am a bit concerned as I don’t want this to happen again.
Anyone had a similar problem? Any feedback appreciated?

    Hi Rising,

We lettered some dark blue curtains approx 18 months ago with Silver Ink from Appollo. I`m not sure where the lacquer part comes in tho?.

Was it specifically designed to protect the silver from fading?.

Never heard of it before and have never had the need to lacquer over the top of Inks.

It stil llooks well just with the silver unlacquered. There is one part near the front which has a very slight “rub-through” but i`m happy that can be patched in with a roller.

I feel your pain tho, rectifying ink work on curtain siders is a horror story.

Sorry maybe I did not explain properly. The curtain itself is laquered! Silver curtain are laquered when made to give a metallic look, or I think its actully grey and the laquar makes it look silver? As I said been doing curtain side lorry for the last 10 years and never really had a problem.

We have even done other silver curtains and no problem, but these two we did were made in Holland, so mabe made different? I don’t know.

Anyway its the ink that seems to have a problem in places, its not diastrous just that I can notice it in places. The ink was mostly dark grey so loads of white and with a good base and pigment.

    May ask Sericol too

    Thanks

Never saw that type of curtain before mate, sorry.

All the rigid vehicles and trailers we get in are built mainly from UK coach builders the curtain material type seems to be consistent throughout.

I recall a spate of curtain siders that were made of some cheap kind of PVC that actually began melting a little when the ink was applied. It made the letters look a little 3 dimensional, such was the stretch.

    We got away with it.

Isn`t there a manufacturer`s tag on the inside of the curtains that you could perhaps ring and get some tech data sheet regarding the make up of the lacquer?. Might help you find a more suitable ink?.

Thanks Rod, Its just a silver curtain nothing fancy.
We have now got a sample of the silver curtain and going to play some here with it.

Always used Sericol with no problems so I thought this was a weird one?

Ive done my fair share of “inked” curtains.Don’t remember seeing any laquered ones.Done some silver curtains about 2 years ago, the PVC looked to be silver from front to back.

Sounds like its a problem with the curtain… or maybe to much thinners in the mix?

How do you apply your ink? i use rollers.
What did you use to prep the curtain?
    Do you have any pictures?

    keep us updated.
