  • watermarking designs?

Posted by Gary Davis on 4 April 2005 at 08:20

    Hi,

Have a feeling one of my designs is about to go ‘walkabouts’
Just wondered what others do to try and prevent this? (other than deposits)

Would it be acceptable to put a copyright watermark across the design?

I realise its no real worry to some clients if its copyrighted or not plus the hassle/cost of chasing it outweighs the pound value of the design, i was hoping it may make other signmakers think twice if it is obvious it is someone elses design.

    it can only help mate…
you could put below it that it belongs to you etc etc
any duplication of the artwork will result in the “customer” being invoiced for the artwork.
that way you have both the customer and the new signmakers attention.

    Yes , watermark it.
If you use Corel , make a nice watermark and then use the interactive transparency tool (the wineglass) , set the transparency to LINEAR and then set how much you want it to be transparent (slider)
Send the artwork out exported as a low rez JPEG 72 dpi) – never send the corel or vector file , this way whoever is cutting it needs to redraw it and its CLEARLY marked that it is your design with the watermark present.
We use a title block for our drawings , IE a template with notes attached (use Roberts suggestion for copyright info , you can put in dates , revisions etc etc)

    I ALWAYS do.
    Much as Rodney suggested.
I figger if they are gonna steal my design,
they might as well work as hard as I did.
The low rez .jpg is a great idea too.
I recently was able to collect a sketch fee
when I saw one of my designs on a sign I did not make.
For my own gynie no less! 😳
Luckily they had also signed a proposal in person.
    Love…..jill

I use a template for artwork which has details of the job on it such as customer name, design name, date created space for customer signature etc. The section where the visual is printed has a watermark on it as well.
Don’t know if it makes any difference at all, if another signmaker is going to copy your work then its not going to make any difference if it says its copyrighted or not.
