Hi, I’ve been asked to replace a hanging pub sign, and thought I’d ask for some tips before quoting.

Can anyone suggest a material (or a supplier of blanks-perhaps a double sided fibreglass type sign) that I can use? If I have a square board with an arc how would this be cut?

I’d be doing it in vinyl, and any suggestions on fixings, materials and what to charge would be greatly appreciated!

A lot to ask, I know – but this is a new area for me!

    Thanks for any suggestions…

Hi Joe, I would use 19mm Foamex. Plot the curve onto paper with your cutter, tape to foamex then jigsaw round.

I make up fittings for hanging signs, there are two ways you can go, either bend a metal strip to match the curve top( easily done, just drill holes in it then screw to top edge of sign). I then weld u shaped round rod to the strip to attach the hanging chain/shackle/carabina.

Other method is to make some channel(might find some 19mm internal if you are lucky) that fits over the top edge and bolts through the sign face, again you need to weld some u’s (upside down of course)to that for hanging.

    Hope this helps

    Joe,

My choice would be to buy ina pre formed GRP blank from someone like Glasplas, it’ll look exactly like a traditional pub sign in a tough duarble finish – 19mm Foamex may give you the chance to save a couple of quid by making it yourself but IMHO would look fairly tacky after a year outside a boozer!

    Good luck

Guy, is it a particularly harsh environment outside boozers? I don’t frequent them so I don’t know.

Any 19mm Foamex sign I have done in the harsh Argyll weather is still looking good after years.

    Cheers
