    Hi all,
Iv’e just had an enquiry about fitting a battenburg pattern to the lower half of an old transit ambulance, its supposedly used for film work etc . Not having done these before are there any standard sizes for the yellow & green panels?
The customer doesnt require reflective so can anyone give me an idea of something close to the correct colours but in a std 5-7 yr vinyl ? ( though having seen all the contours, (both original & driver induced!) maybe a cast vinyl would be a better option )

    Thanks in advance

    Paul

The official rule for battenberg is as follows, although you probably don’t have to follow this exactly as it isn’t a real ambulance:

The rectangle should be minimum 600mm long. Start with a green one in the centre and then alternate out with yellow then green etc. You should end with yellow on the front and back ends which should be at least 2/3 of the length of your full rectangle size.

As for colours, hard to say really. Some are done in fluorescent reflective, some are done in standard engineering grade reflective, so shades of yellow and green vary.

I would determine your rectangle size and then cut a load and construct the kit on the vehicle. ‘Real’ ones are cut to size and shape before application but that is a lot of messing about for a one off.

    thanks big g,
One more question, is there a set depth for the panels?

If I remember right the depth should be 50% of the length.

On most Police cars, for example, the block size was generally 600 x 300mm

You want to end up with 7 blocks along the length if you can as this looks in proportion. So adjust the block sizes to get 5 full ones in and at least 2/3 of full length for the ends.

To be honest, these rules are rarely followed, especially on ambulances. But it should at least guide you to getting a reasonable copy of a battenberg.
