Hi all, just a quick question that i hope someone can assist me with.

we have been asked to quote for 30 to 40 edge lit signs to sit on top of a counter display type unit.

the light is to be constructed out of a 10mm piece of perspex with letters or logo engraved/ routed, sat on top of a light unit to project the light through the perspex and illuminate the engraved area.

however, we are struggling to find a method of lighting the unit within a small confined space withinn the aluminium profile base, it is too small to get a small florecent light in.

it has to be 240 volts with no external transformers or owt

    ANY IDEAS??

I could submit the design if this area allowed me to add pictures

    cheers

    Hi stephen
ide advise using a strip of LED’s from ashby. white is pricey at £18 but other colours are only about £8.
the reason i say ashby is because their LED’s WITHOUT GOING TECHY PROJECT LIGHT LIKE A TORCH. so beam the light up the perspex edge illuminating the engraved areas.
as you will know LED’s have little heat and are very slim.

hi robert, thanks for the reply.

how are the leds powered, because ideally it all wants to be “in the box” type of setup.

also is there anywhere that can supply the aluminium profile, as we are struggling to find a supplier, no local stock holders have owt like?

    cheers

    Hi Stephen,

Applelec sign components can supply edge lit kits, including the aluminium extrusion. I bought a kit recently to illuminate a multi panel tenant directory for London office. The client new what he wanted and we merely had to engrave the individual plates before fixing them into the ali profile. It was our first but I have to say it looked pretty smart. The system is basically “plug and go”. I’ll post a picture on the boards when I’m back in the office on Monday.

i’ll give a call on monday, looked at their website and it looks very impressive, although they don’t mention what it is i’m looking for.

    cheers again

I think Rodney Gold has a contact or can supply that sort of thing!
I’m sure you could do a site search using his name to find the thread.

dave, thanks for the tip on applelec.

i was right they are on my door step, i didn’t realise they did “trade”, they are very helpful, some great ideas etc.

you were right they do sell the edgelit as a kit, using 12volt tiny leds.

we are considering buying some of the led kits and creating a new “halo” effect on our business sign as well.

    cheers mate
