  • Camm1 + Vinyl, wise to swap?

Posted by Robert Grant on 26 December 2004 at 10:46

    Hi Everbody
I have an older Camm1, 24″cutter in very good condition I also have approx 50 meters of mixed colour vinyl and half a log of app tape but my problem is that I have to carry from upstairs in my house to my shed/workshop in the garden as I dont’t want to leave the cutter in such a cold place and to a lesser extent security reasons and twice now I have nearly fallen doen the stairs with it so it’s a bit of a pain. I am just starting out on a very much part time basis and want to concentrate on tee shirts and banners for the first year. I was thinking of trying to swap the above for a Stika & heat press or sell on ebay and then buy stika and press. I’m not entirly sure I would be doing the right thing as some time down the line I may need a bigger cutter than a stika and the camm1 is in top condition for it’s age, any advice would be welcome.

    Cheers Boab (chat.)

Forget the stikka you’ve got a better machine there already. Stikkas were not designed to run a commercial business.

Could you not get an old musical keyboard stand? Then you could lift it out of a cupboard, pop it on the stand and maybe use it in the kitchen or a bedroom, something like that.

As Paul said, its a much better machine for doing commercial work, with the wider width you can do a wider range of jobs. Although the Stika is small and portable, you may find it limiting on some commercial work.

On the other hand, if you’re determined to go that route, there are literally dozens of ppl on UKSB who would buy the plotter & vinyl from you, and no doubt someone with a stika lying around gathering dust. Maybe worth posting up and seeing whats available, far less hassle than Ebay.

    Cheers, Dewi

keeep the better/bigger machine. its just my opinion mate, but the stika is a toy compared to a proper cutter. the machine is capable of producing signs and i know many use it, but i do not rate it and would never advise anyone thats trying to make a living from our line of work to use one.
i see a stika as a machine a large department store would buy in & hook up to a back office comp if they need lots of small promotion signs throughout their shop.

The Camm 1 was the first machine i got and NEVER went wrong, stick with what you have is my advice.

Couldnt you just beef up the security in your shed instead of going up and down the stairs?

    Happy Christmas

Keep the Camm1. If you don’t want to use it right now, stow it away.

Whatever you swap for it, the person getting the camm1 will be getting the better end of the deal

I have had a 1000mm camm1 for 8 years, never given me an ounce of trouble, works 6 days a week, every week.

Had a mate that had a stika machine, used it for 3 months and realised that it was really only a hobby machine as rob says, and could not punch out the commercial work like he wanted.

Sorry to be so negative, but I think if you let go of the camm1, you’ll live to regret it.

    Cheers

Thanks very much for all the advice each of you have been great, I will heed the good advice and hold on to the Camm1. Even my wife said I would be mad to swap for a smaller machine (she’s in her “size is everything” phase). I’m sure you are all right and it would’nt be too long before I regret it.

i bought a stikka, as a second machine.

Took it out of the box, cut 1 piece of vinyl with it and sent it right back.

    Nothing more than a toy.

    You made the right decision.

(she’s in her “size is everything” phase)

don’t you just hate that phase 🙄

I work with a Camm 1 and it does everything (well, not everything obviously). Lately it’s been a bit temperamental, but we love it anyway.
