  • Does anybody have advice for a novice airbrush user please?

Posted by Andrew Bennett on 25 December 2004 at 21:16

    Hi All,
My wife bought me an airbrush for xmas.
OK it’s only a Revell modellers airbrush but her arguement was that I should start small and if I get any good with it, then I could buy something better.
Does anybody have any advice for a novice airbrush user please?

    Good for you!
It is bound to make your work more custom.
My advice would be to keep it clean,
and to go to a Letterhead meet with it
so you can get first-hand help.
    Love….Jill

There is one in Scotland in May 2006.
    I’ll be there.
There is also one in August in Greece.
I am hosting one in August also, but it is a far way to travel.
Maybe try phoning up Paul from SignWorx and having a bit of a Mini-Meet.

screen inks i use vary from sericol to keeps softside ‘though i dont know whether its still available
cause you dont need much to blow fades etc you’l find a litre tub way too much but i think thats the min quantities they do
have a chat with a screen printer see if he could give you some small amounts of colours

make sure you use the recommended thinner Mixing is a bit of guess work got a be thin enough to spray but use light coats not too wet
laying it on wet will result in the vinyl melting
as it is designed to go on plastic /vinyl you should not have to worry about
adhesion just make sure the material is clean
i generally only wipe over with a damp rag with a bit of meths,
if the spraying is going to take a lot of wear as on say the front of a truck and it was a fine blend then i would use a foam roller and lay off with a brush a coat of one shot UV clear just to save on wear though most stuff stands up ok without

once you get the hang of the airbrush youll wonder why you hadnt got one before

though posted before these graphics were done in inks using a mask

    Terry

this is a clearer view overall
the design was drawn over a photo in signlab digitised cut in silver then before it was fitted i cut the same again as an inline )mask and sprayed just shadows and highlights removad the mask taped and applied

once you have the design sorted the fancy bit only takes minutes

ive done another tribal for the back just got to paint that the same
ill take some pics to show

    Terry

(just for those that may not know, if you click on the image loaded it should popup to a larger version if there is one) this is a board modification to give easy screen veiwing of replies etc so you no longer have to wait on large images to load.

Absolutely brilliant as far as I’m concerned.
That’s what I’m hoping to learn to do, once I have sorted out my “studio” (thats the garage once I’ve cleared it out said Mrs Andy)
    ans purchased the right gear.
