RAL colour matching
Posted by Gary Davis on 24 November 2004 at 21:28Hi, was wondering what everyone on here does about colour matching to RAL colours
By that i mean i have a painted sign, that will be replaced with a powder coated alu one. Have i got to buy a RAL swatch at £55 quid or is there an easier way. Can paint companies give you the equivilent RAL no. to there paint?
i dont do many powder coated signs so was hoping to avoid having to buy a swatch!!!

a lot of vinyl colour charts have ral numbers on could you colour match or do you just use paint? if you gave me a ral i could try to match it (nearest)for you but i’m sure there are more knowlegeable people about than me ! if not i’ll do my best

I used to have the same problem until i bought a swatch – mine was from metamark and costs £10.88 ! It’s got 200 odd colours in a fan swatch and i’d say this is an invaluable tool to have.

If you are on good terms with your local car bodyshop, go and talk nicely to them. The paint manufacturers include RAL in the pile of swatches they give to repairers and they never get used. You should be able to talk your man into giving you his. That’s where mine came from. 😀
Paint manufacturers don’t need an equivilent. A RAL number is its own specification and they will all be able to produce paint in that colour.
RAL is used extensively on the continent, in the same way that we use Pantone here, and if you deal with foreign companies, or if your clients have foreign parent companies, you can’t manage without a swatch.

Give Trimite A ring & ask them for their paint swatch with the ral colours on – cost you nothing more than the phone call 😛
