just want a rough price on how much to charge.the sign is 200cm’s wide by 60cm’s
i originally quoted £40 but that was before he said he wanted the background green instead of left white,he also supplied the board and its his design(layout)

Pricing can only be based on your own criteria, issues such as time taken, material costs, labour charges etc. Each member of these boards will give a different price on those pieces, each according to their own unique situation. Basically its a difficult one to answer…

quick guess at about £70-£85mate.. i dont do the day to day pricing in our place. sorry…

i agree with keith on this one mate.. sorry i didnt see the second sign… so no price.
thing is, you didnt need to design sign, he gave you it.
the board, he supplied…
you cut and applied, so easy money.but dont go too low just because of this one situation.
where you are loacted etc will also play a big part in the prices you charge.
i am in the glasgow area, up here our prices are said to be low, i disagree, when i see what some charge. -
another thing is, we pirce per letter… many price the job in whole..
e,g,1inch letter 35p
4inch letter £1.20 etc etcmultiply based on the amount of characters and thats your price.
if hundreds of text, you can afford to discount if need be. -
Widget, price it to your needs.
calculate how much you need to make a week to cover your overheads+ profit add the uckin about factor etc. If its your first job you will be eager to do it, been there… As Brucey says, higher or lower, always go higher than you think, its easy to come down, but hard to go up were price is concerned.

based on the lions head, we charged a minimum of £15 per A4 printed by pc60 but would often charge something like that at £20-£25 for a one off.
thats just the head by the way 😉 and i dont know sizes of it, im just saying an A4 size

i think the head is about 40cm’s by 28cm’s
i said at a guess £20 just for the head,i had to scan it from a photograph as well

We have found a very good formula for pricing , that is 5x material cost. On very large stuff , we drop to 4x and teeny teeny stuff- we go to 6-8x. This excludes artwork or fitting.
It doesnt always work out perfectly on a job by job basis , but averaged it does. -
Theres a variety of reasons for this, but the first one I’d have charged £100 for. (I can almost see the eyes going (oogle) 😮 🙄 ) Reason being, 9 times out of ten, the artwork has to be made cut ready, the sheet material needs to be thoroughly checked for scratches and dings which end up being your fault if the customer hasn’t seen them before you start to fit, and at the end of the day, 3 of my local competition seem to believe my prices are too expensive, so I’d hate to disappoint them.
The 2nd, as a one of print for the head, I would have charged £35, and to apply it to a signboard, complete with lettering, £55.
Price wise there are lots of different reasons why you shouldn’t charge to little, one of which is the obvious, you end up being the busy fool. Although as I have said, I am percieved as expensive, some of my early job prices I tried competing with other local sign companies and although I got the work, I was racing round all week for very little money. Now I charge more, I’m constantly busy (touch wood) and I still have to work some weekends, but at least now I take home a wage and alot of the timewasters I had at one time don’t even come in the shop. You’ll have heard it hundreds of times, unless you’re doing this as a hobby, you need to show a reasonable profit, its just business. Your time can be wasted on a daily basis by it ‘Ave it cheap’ brigade and unfortunately once you get known for being cheap, its very very hard to raise your prices.

Dewi , in the final analysis , ideally , you charge what the market can bear. If you ARE more expensive , you have to define why. Only if you deliver on time , deliver superior quality and deliver EXACTLY what the client requires or have a creative advantage , can you actually charge more than anyone else. If you are getting better prices than others around you , you obviously ARE doing something better!!!!

To be honest Rodney I think its because I’m an oddball. The solutions I come up with are often met with ‘Oh, I didn’t think of that’ so I presuming ppl like the way I make signs. Either that or its my winning smile 😀
Also when I’m doing shop signs in particular, I have a network of contacts who can supply everything from an alarm system through to a till, as well as joiners, plumbers etc who can do any work needed within the premises. It may not sound like much, but new businesses do appreciate this help and at the end of the day, what am I doing but passing on a number of a trusted tradesman.
As you say, there is a market price, but if you can offer something unique that others can’t, you’re effectively the only one in the market.
