Which VHB tape and who supplies it?
Posted by magpie on 15 November 2004 at 13:08Hi, I’m on the prowl for info again. Can anyone tell me which VHB tape is best for general use, who supplies it and a rough cost?
Many thanks, Peter

I use a company called JAG Sign Supplies. They sell a variety of tapes, the strong VHB stuff comes on a 33m roll and costs around £20. The cheaper variety is about £10 for a 50m roll.

i use a couple of places:
NBT = 01506 411572
bruce douglas (aberdeen) = dont have number handy sorry3M is the best make for vhb. considering that is all thats holding some signs, its best keeping with the best. having said that, i have heard there are great alternative brands.
i think you will pay anything from £30 – £50 a roll.
a roll only has 30mtrs on it.dewi those seem like great prices, any idea of a brand name>?

had a look at vikings and i guess if your wanting the grey 3m VHB then your gonna pay £25, i have just checked and we currently pay about £20 for this one. it does go upto £54 a roll for the white, which we also have. so thats probably where im getting the £50 a roll from.
where ever you buy from. when working with this stuff, always sit it back down on the silicon paper. a dent or a bit of paper sticking to the side causes it to peel itself away from the carrying paper and its a nightmare to try and get back on. 9/10 times you have to bin about 3-4 feet to get it back on track. -

They don’t have any markings on them but the strong stuff is about 10mm wide, clear, with like a red backing stuff on it. The cheaper stuff is 25mm wide, black with a green backing. The strong stuff holds up well for things like number plates and small metal signs, whilst the cheap stuff, I use it to stick anything upto 8ft x 15″ foamboard onto walls and the like… you have to virtually cover the back of the foamboard though. I’d say this one was designed for smallish foam-based signs, stuck on a non-porous surface. Touch wood, nowts fallen down 😀

Hi just thought I’d add my two bits,, new to this so here goes..
We find that if you want it stick and you want it real good you cant go past The 3M product called RED BACK VHB(because off the red liner its on). which comes in *white foam *gray foam * clear..
roll is 33mt x 25mm high price though about $150.00 (au) dollars
e.g. 5 mm Stainless steal High grade used clear 25mm 3mvhb to hold the name SALT on to fiberglass boat. it is still on and look good
(NO screws look)
3m is good for the job you don’t ever want to take off..you can get the cheaper stuff without the 3M branding although we have found out that is probably made in the same factory, it is mixed a little different..
and if you try real hard you can get 1200mm wide roll x 45mt coast about $4000.00 (au)
Now have you ever tryed to get vhb of a job????

We also use a 3m VHB tape , called ISOTAK , its almost like a clear jelly and is touted to hold 10kgs per sq cm , its a bitch to strip the liner without the jelly like tape lifting and requires a little time to “cure” , but its bulletproof.
Just as an aside , we find marine silicon sealant (that clear caulking used for fish tanks etc) a wonderful bonding agent. It’s almost impossible to remove anything bonded with this and we use it extensively to apply pex letter to brick walls etc.
