Anyone know of any good neon transformers?
Posted by i catchers on 12 November 2004 at 08:23Hi
Does anyone know of a neon supplier of GOOD electronic neon transformers? I have used the same ones (Hanson) for years and have noticed a highish failure rate on certain types. I would like to try another type that would be suitable for indoor window hanging displays.
Anyone into neon who can help??????
Thanks 😀

what is reputable and what you would view as a good transformer, i don’t know mate, I’m not a sign spark. but i know amari plastics do all neon tubing & accessories.

Amari is a good shout Rob but they are jacks of all trades and wouldn’t know a cane of neon if it fell on them – a better shout would be masonlite as they make the glass, electrodes etc and would probably be able to advise on decent transformers

feckon masonlite mate, thats the other one i was trying to remember. :lol1:
i was in contact with them a few times when we looked into starting to make our own neon. i was asking them if there was any neon schools in the uk & that kind of thing.
anyway… thats another story. 😉 :lol1:thats for jogging my memory 😕 :lol1:

We use Anstrong electronic tranformers mainly from Matel, to date have been reliable
Externals, we always used to use f.a.r.t, but experienced a high failure, then switched to matel resin and these have been surperb.craig

thanks for the reply craig. 😉
but is this company name for real?
quote :f.a.r.t) :lol1: :lol1:

unfortunate name, presumably a different meaning in italy

Fart GMBH (non dimmable) (German) cheap and cheerful (Amari plastics and Specialist neon supplies ( a div of Amari Plastics)
Matel UK (french company)(dimmable) sold through cox plastics
Masonlite as alredy mentioned
Tunewell used to tmake th Rolls Royce of transformers but have since pulled out of the general market but still make convertors
Mode Electronics (UK Technical wizzards including all forms of state of the art controllers.)The transformer you use is very much dependent on the application, you can overpsec as well as underspec a transformer and both will cause problems leading to early transformer failure. A Milliampmeter that encirlcels the tubes to test current drawn is almost essential especially for big jobs

Thanks for all your advice and help.
I will try and see if Tunewell transformers still have a range of neon transformers as i used to use them many years ago.
I also like the idea of Matel range so i may try those too.
Its always worth trying to improve on things so its time for a change.
Thanks to everyone
