😕 Hi to you all, this is my first post.

I have over the past week suffered with ribbons snapping on my PC60.
Seems to always be yellow and cyan.
I have not had this problem before but its getting a tad expensive.
Tomorrow I have 20 ribbons coming and different vinyl to try but anyone got any ideas.
I have no problem printing spot colours.

    Are you using refills?

Check that the ribbon is loaded centraly on the spool. If it’s not centred properly the bulk of the ribbon will be rubbing against the cartridge casing causing friction and extra stress on the ribbon which can cause it to snap.

Another thing to try is a lower running temperature for the head. The PC600 has a feature whereby this can be set to a lower simply by pushing the control panel buttons in a certain sequence to select the lower temperature mode (although this may casue a deterioration in print quality)- I’m not sure if this also applies to the PC60. Rob posted some PDF files which included this information some time ago. I’ll find the link amd post it again for you. 😀

I couldn’t find the link so I have cut and pasted from the pdf file I had originaly saved onto my own PC. Here it is in full:-

    Frequently Asked Questions
    Topic: ColorCAMM PRO PC-600
    ST502200
How to change the Printing Mode 1 and Printing Mode 2?
    Printing Mode 1 (Default) :
The printing mode dedicated to prevent the snapping ribbon problem prior to the
    printing quality.
The printing result could become lighter or more scratchy.
    Printing Mode 2 :
This printing mode has a better printing quality compared to the Printing Mode 1.
Using this mode could result in the snapping ribbon problem.
    <To set Printing Mode 1>
Turn on the secondary power SW while pressing the [HEAD CLEANING] and
    [DOWN ARROW] keys.
    <To set Printing Mode 2>
Turn on the secondary power SW while pressing the [HEAD CLEANING] and [UP
    ARROW] keys.
You can recognize Printing Mode 1 and Printing Mode 2 by checking the system
    report.
Please check the System SW bit-3.
If it is 0, the machine is set as Printing Mode 1.
If it is 1, the machine is set as Printing Mode 2.

    Thanks for that Phil,
The ribbons are Refills supplied in carts, will give them a thorough check tomorrow.
I have seen some interesting items on ribbons in this forum and will take time to digest them.
I don’t know if there is an option on the PC60 to reduce heat on the print head?.
Its only started to snap the ribbons since I started to use this new batch.
Have done full colour with no problem until now.
Will let you know how I get on.
    Cheers,
    Robbo.

There is sometimes a problem when printing VERY thin lines that are vertical, the heads (actually its the roller next to the head that lays down the resin – check that to see its not damaged) acts as a sort of heat sealer type thing and the thin line snaps the ribbon , trick is to thicken up these lines.

    Thanks for that Rodney,
The problem is it has already printed one of these with no problem.
I have spent the night reading the forum on breaking ribbons and checking and re checking then cleaning the printer, it now glows in the dark 😛 .
I have now decided to move on to the next stage before new material and ribbons arrive.
MIKE GRANT if you are out there you spoke about the little composite roller next to the print head in the forum in march 2003. Would like to know where I can purchase a couple of these ASAP.
I am looking at doing everything possible before I try a rerun of the printer.

    Thanks again,
    ROBBO

Hi RobboI’ve been away a couple of days – Sorry i wasn’t available to reply. All the folks here seem to have helped enough!
    The boards do work!
Carol here has been dealing with your problem – and I’ve got to say the ribbons giving you a problem were ours. BUT – as you say – problem solved – and we’ll replace all the snapped ribbons FOC – just send them back and Carol will sort it out.
    Regards Dave

    Hi Dave,
    Thanks for the reply,
I would like to say that the help from your office was more than anyone could expect.
It was a refreshing change to speak to your staff i.e. Carol and get the same feeling of concern for my problem, that I had.
I am just over the moon that the problem is now sorted and have now printed the finished job for my customer.
You can be assured that I will continue to purchase your ribbons.
:lol1: SWEETS STILL A BIT MANKY THOUGH :lol1:
Thanks again mate and once again the forum for the advice.

They remind me of when my granddad (bless) used to buy a packet in January suck on one or two until August, 😕 then give the remainder to me as a treat for the next year 😮
I wonder if Dave would do a deal (-)
If I save them until I get 200 in wrappers would I get a new set of carts. 😛 😛 😛
