  • Advice on an entry level cutter / printer

    Hi all,

Can anyone advise me on which make/model would be best please?

I’m a ticketwriter looking to move into vinyl signs, and although I was looking at a vinyl cutter only, a problem over the weekend made me think again. I have realised that I’d need a machine capable of printing posters as well.

I’d be more than happy with a 24″ vinyl cutter, and I was struggling to fulfil an order for a lot of posters (A2 size) to a tight deadline over the weekend.

My computer printer can cope with sizes up to A3 only, so it would make sense to have a vinyl cutter that can handle the printing jobs also – preferably this size or even up to 20″ x 30″, which is another popular poster size. Anything bigger wouldn’t get used as I’d do them by hand.

So in a nutshell, a vinyl cutter / poster printer up to 24″. Price is important as I’m now part time with the monsters pictured, and I see this machine as a labour saving device.

Any advice is appreciated, as is a rough cost of machinery and supplies. New or second hand considered.

    Cheers….Now back to the rusks!

    hi joe
my immediate advice would be a versacamm or rockhopper type machine with cutter bundled. (thats if, you are working from a room in the house with babies around ) both these machines are eco-solvent and would best suit that inviroment. they also come 30inches wide & are printers & cutters.
i think the rockhopper and cutter would give you the best of both worlds though.
on the other hand if you are working from your shed/garage i would advise on the cadet. same as versacamm but true solvent inks.
all the machines mentioned are pretty new to the market and i doubt you finding one second hand or going cheap.
i am not sure the rockhopper bundled price for (cutter, printer and laminator) but i hear it comes i about the same cost as a new versacamm or cadet. so no matter what you are looking at shelling out £9000.
seems alot i know, but does cover everything and i know if you get something else now, you will be looking to move to the above within 6 months.
im sure others will give more advice, im just giving a quick reply. 😉

    just had another thought…
depending on what you see yourself printing most, you could go for a machine like the graphtec printer and cutter. it comes 40inches & 60 inches wide & also cuts. for things like posters & stickers etc this is ideal, the inks dont smell the way solvent inks may & is much safer “if” you are working from a room at home and kids around.
my advice for the sign maker is still the cadet first, as an all rounder. but for posters, stickers & vinyl cutting the graphtec would work very well for you.
you would also save yourself a few grand as its a fair bit cheaper than the above machines.
