Made ya look huh.
This is all hand-painted on Alumalite.
The customer wanted a 1940s look.

did you have to paint the backing colour or is a colour metal that is used?

ok probably a daft question but…
when painting a sign like this by hand, do you have to wait until the white is dry before painting the outline? i know the obvious and safest way would be to wait but thought this may take ages…
the reason i ask is i always see the hand written signs with the painters shadow… the little space between the shadow and the text. i am led to believe this came about to save time when painting work as you could hit it with both colours withought the paint mixing, due to the space?

or am i talking crap and i should keep to the sticky stuff? 😳 :lol1:

Nope, Rob, for a licky-sticky guy you are correct in your assumptions.
I am no authority, but I believe that the drop shadow was invented by
a signwriter who was in a hurry.
Lettering enamel takes ages to dry, and rather than waiting,
all you have to do is use a mahl stick to rest your hand upon,
so you are not continually dragging it thru your wet paint.

I did the white lettering two days ago and let it dry overnight.
Then I did the outlines and secondary copy yesterday.
Then I had to do a quick double-coat on the white! GRRR.

The material comes from Laminators Inc., a PA company.
It is made in various shades like candy apple red and safety yellow, etc.
You can also purchase edge caps from them, which I did,
and you trim them with a Stanley knife and apply using silicone.

Jill has the reduction of your photo for the web caused the apparent distortion of the word ‘Refrigeration’?

I’m looking at the tops of the letters where they conform to the curve. The cross bars of the letters seem to
have lost their uniform thickness and appear to taper.

Other than that I think you’ve done great in achieving the clients requirements.

of course, following my pounce pattern which
I made on the computer!
I sorta liked em like that….but then again
I am getting senile.

Rob: You’re right about shadows

If you splash out the name on the fascia by the time you reach the end its about right to apply the shadow.

Here’s where the mahl stick proves useful because you can rest your writing hand on it without affecting the work that still relatively wet.

Dropping away from the letter by about 2-3mm avoided any merging of colours. Although I frequently go bang up to the wet letter without any merging.
It’s mostly to deal with outside work where you need to finish the job in day and not have to go back.

Artie!

I remember a story about Artie who was part of the underworld in the East End of London. He was a hit man but didn’t use a fire arm. He would just creep up on his victims and strangle them from behind.

On one particular occasion a good friend of his asked him a huge favour:

Would he top two guys who were bugging him

‘How much for?’ Artie asks

‘Well I’m down on me luck Artie’

‘Tell ya what, I’ll do it for a pound!’ he says smuggly

Of Artie goes to carry out the dastardly deed.

The next morning the Newspapers carry the heading:

Artie Chokes Two for a Pound
