  • Neon "OPEN" Signs popping up everywhere? Where do

Posted by Signhere on 13 July 2004 at 09:50

Hi all, One of my customers wants one of these neon “open” signs that seem to be popping up all over the place, I need to get one for him but the trouble is it needs to say “closed” anyone know where they come from.

Is there a little gang of neon makers trying to take over the world with these things or is it just me being blind to being able to find one??

    Kind Regards

    Gav

The open neons come from places like the gadget shop and are sold as gimmicks rather than signs.

For a closed sign you will probably need to go to your local neon manufacturer, there are also a couple on the boards I think who might be able to help out.

If it is an elliptical blue and red open sign, these are sold in Costco at £89 plus VAT (we cant make them for that) havent seen a closed one yet (but you could easily wire it to the main light switch so that when they put the lights out the open sign goes out (same as closed nO !!)

Cheers chaps, So, next question is who can make me one that says closed and how much am I looking at so I can let the customer know?

The light switch idea is obviously the cheapest yet but if its a closed sign he wants closed he gets, usually wouldn’t bother but he spends enough dough with me to go out of my way a little.

Hopefully one of you guys can quote me on this.

    Regards

Can I recommend the Signupdate magazine which has a section in the back listing manufacturers of various items from neons to moving message signs well most products.

The magazine can be viewed online at http://www.sign-update.co.uk look at the last few pages

I have always found neon to be very expensive made to measure although I am trying to remember a site which brings bucket loads in to the country from China of course. They are standard neons standard words and standard colours. They are freestanding or hang with a chain although do not come in a perspex box. If I can find it I will post

I am not sure if this company was the one I was thinking about – it is certainly the same neons. A OPEN neon cost £145 plus VAT but I recollect we could get them for about £95

    Hi There

There are really three types of neon signs on the Market. The signs at The Gadget Shop are the cheapest and suitable for home use, Imported neon signs are for more commerical use and are normally selling at £150-180 (cheaper for trade) for a standard OPEN sign. And then you have custom made normally UK made signs.

The imported signs i found were OK but they have some draw backs. Limited colours and designs and maybe some quality issues. But on the whole quite good. I used to import these signs myself and stopped a few years ago due to many transformer problems!

I have had enquiries like this before and when i quote for having CLOSED added to the sign they normally only go for OPEN. Do you really need to advertise when you are closed! But saying that the customer is always right. 😮

Hope this helps and if i can help further let me know.

    Regards

there was a question about this on the forum a while ago but i can’t find it 😳 – there is a firm in the midlands somewhere that sells this type of sign in an acrylic case complete with lead, plug and chains to hang it for about £97 – http://www.neonexpress.co.uk

    hope this helps

It dismays me that everyone is pushing the cheaper imported neon signs.

There is a great UK neon market out there making quality neon signs that is always overlooked. I know that price is always an issue but it doesnt hurt to charge more for a unusual one off neon sign in different colours and styles than trying to sell a “same old same old” import.

The neon trade over the years has had some bad press but in general neon shops now offer a high degree of expertise and sign knowledge.

So get the yellow pages out and see if they can make a neon sign that is different, well designed and long lasting. 😮
