shop signage: max parrott house
My first dibond/rynabond/alucolor (you know, the ally stuff 😉 ) sign 😀 And yet another A Board 😉
Prints were done on the PC60, everything else is 751 Oracal vinyl. Main sign took 3 hours to cut, print, prepare the ally stuff and apply it all 😀 I had the sign fitted by my new fitter (who is quicker than a Kwik Fit fitter 😉 ) and it all seems to have gone to plan, fingers crossed.
The ABoard looks a little bear atm as the shop doesn’t have their phone number yet 😕 but I’ll take a piccy when its all done 😀 The top of the roller shutters I’m going to wrap in a bit of white vinyl, then add the telephone number and all the gubbins that are needed to finish it off.

Have to say you’re A-Board is good, has a bit of character to it mate.
I say this because you said it’s pretty plain. Ok the text maybe a little bland but the focal point is the parrot. Not only that, the humour of the speech bubble adds to it…
To explain what I mean… lets say you have the best design of text and graphics ever.
The parrot would not be as distinctive as it would be lost in the over the top text and it is parrot sales that you are trying to put across… so in its on way, it does the job perfect… hope that made sense?It’s Friday night, I’m rambling now and only one beer down the hatch… hmmm I need another!
Regarding the print being laminated like nik says…
I would say, not necessary for this type of sign. Thermal prints although not perfect, have been for some time, a sign maker’s print. They are very stable and abrasion guard is good. I wouldn’t say ideal for vehicles, (like any print) but no reason why you need to laminate for say a pavement sign or the like.
On the other hand, laminate /cover in clear vinyl and it does give a nice gloss finish. 😉 -
Thank you 😀 Thoroughly enjoyed working with the ally stuff, it cut quite well with a stanley knife, and I found it to be quite easy to apply to. Very similar to apply to the metal aboards, so I felt quite at home 😀
I haven’t laminated them as such, I’ve sprayed them with the polishy stuff, Mr Sheen. I have alot more work to do at that shop over the next few weeks including fitting both windows with 1.8m square digi prints, so I’m going to keep my eye on them. If there is any fading or I notice any problems, I figure worst case scenario, I laminate with 751 clear. Hopefully it won’t come to that.
As far as cost, I’ve been working it out over and over again, and I get it to about £20 a metre ish. So I’m working on a £30 a metre costing, to allow for all the mistakes I keep making 😳 😳 I’m unsure about whether my costings are spot on, but a recent suggestion was to print a solid black ribbon until it runs out (full width of vinyl) and this may give a clearer indication (ie times x 4, you get full colour etc etc)
The best thing about this job was the amount of white space around the parrots, I just filled them with diddy stickers (including a rather fetching one of Liam’s logo :D) as the ribbon is running across the vinyl anyway, so I figure I can get some nice stickers at the same time as doing a job. Got to say though, the quality of the prints was spot on, not ultra perfection, but right for the job. Well impressed with my PC60, just have to figure out what to call it now 😉 😉 😉

+ your mistakes carful use of spot colours will reduce that a lotchris

al so think shapes to print eg the top triangle will cost you more to print than the bottom one !!

Nice one Chris 😀 The costings I did were based on the prices I’ve been paying for the ribbons with PrintOne, vinyl costs with Europoint, so it may account for the few quid difference. Glad I worked on the £30 a metre though, it’ll make pricing up alot easier.
The mistakes I’ve made though are very basic ones that even I should know better 😳 I placed a ribbon in the machine that I’d wound on, but too tightly. Obviously it snapped 😳 The other mistake I made was even more embaressing, I’d just finished printing the yellow, started on magenta, and I lifted the vinyl up to see how it was printing. The machine made some wierd noises and stopped.
I see what you mean with the triangles, I’d fill in the top and bottom gaps with extra little stickers though (rainbow) My favourite trick so far is the “No tools are left in this vehicle over night”, I’ve sold quite a few of these as alot of the local tradesmen go into the bookies next door and the pub over the road, and the other one is that timeless classic bumper sticker “S&$t Happens!” 😆
Have you ever had a problem with the print coming off when app tape is applied to the print? Only reason I ask, is the big red parrot on the shop sign has 2 or 3 tiny spots (invisible from groundlevel luckily) which came off with the app tape. I panicked thinking it might take off more, but it seemed okay on the rest of the print 😕

print coming off could be several things – surface contamination – fag ash – ribbon vinyl combination – if the problem persists change vinyl as the surface may not be soft enough for that type of ribbon nodout dave staddon will have a worth while contribution

Knowing me Chris, it’ll probably be the cigarette ash 😳 😳 😳 I’ve tried the Oracal 651 and 751, and Avery (think it was 600 or 700, something like that), I’ll try a few different vinyl as you say though, if it continues to do it. Most likely be the ciggy ash though 🙁
