which vinyl should i use for boat sails?
Posted by Nigel Hindley on 3 June 2004 at 23:57Hi folks,
Have a wee job to do – 3 company logos on a boat sail! I figure that banner vinyl just wont last though the customer sems happy for me to use this. Is the vinyl used on truck curtains more suitable ? if anyone can advise or even better do the job for me as they are relatively small logos so cant be doing with oredering minimum lengths of vinyl for this job, can supply the logos in any format?
Appreciate any help.
Regards,
Nige

Hi
What are they made of, PVC?
Banner vinyl should be OK, if not screen print,
or if not the logos not to incricate mask and ink.
Shop about, as I can remember dorotape for one I’m sure don’t have a minimum length order. -
Hi outline,
Not sure what they are made of, we only have to supply the vinyl the boat is actually in Ireland at the moment, would banner vinyl cope with the extreme movement?

Hi Nigel,
I think you need to establish what the material is for sure – because you are very likely to have problems otherwise. Mactac used to do a product called Macsoft800 for “textile” banners as opposed to PVC banners but I think it may have been droped from the range now as I can’t find any info on it other than in my swatch. Either way I think that marking onto sails is going to be pushing the limits of any vinyl more than it is capable of. Maybe you could use a heat transfer type material like those for garment application but obviously you’d then need to heat press onto the sail which could be tricky I guess !!
It sounds like the sort of job I personally would just say no to because of the potential for problems and lots of wasted time 😉 Sorry, I don’t mean to sound too negative, just realistic 😀Nigel

Hi mate.. Just found this post and would say NO…
Nigel is right, you need something more… a cut vinyl job just isn’t enough.,
Banner vinyl or truck is for a rubber-ish, type finish, not a thin nylon like I would expect this to be… heat transfer maybe? You could ask for off-cuts to try and see the outcome.
Solution? I don’t have one… But best suggestion would be the log printed on fabric type vinyl and heat pressed.Agin, like Nigel advise.. isn’t worth the hassle unless you are making big bucks!

I have used a material called Dacron for sail graphics. I don’t know who supplies it but a web search might yield results. It’s basically a self adhesive version of the sail material. The customer I was doing the work for supplied the material. They were Pinnel & Bax in Northampton, who are boat gear suppliers.
Hope this helps a bit.

If it is nylon you can get garment marking material called nylmark, victory do it in a range of colours ….. but obviously you need a heat press to apply
