another coral draw question ?
thanks to everyone who replied to my last post about what corel draw versions every one uses . i went on ebay and bought version 10 .after most of the bank holiday playing around i still cant add shadows to text can it be done?and if we was preparing a design to be cut would each colour have to be drawn on another layer thanks jd

Yes and no. To shadow something use the extrude function under the effects tab but although good for print not good for cutting. Drop shadows are different and can easily be done by duplicating the text/object – moving to new position – changing colour – putting to back and then welding/trimming as required. To outline use contour option but this this make hundreds of straight line segments which you may need to smooth. Outline from toolbar makes a bitmap outline, this can be changed to an object (under arrange tab) but results are variable.

Depends what sort of shadow you want mate…. If youre going to print rather than cut in vinyl then I would use the “interactive drop shadow” tool which is on the tool flyout menu below the “text” tool button. There are lots of preset effects for this or you can adjust it yourself using the sliders when you select the tool.
If you want a cuttable shadow then you need to create it using a manual duplication of the original object i.e. select your text then drag it down and to the left a little, click and release the RIGHT mouse button whilst still holding the left one down – this will duplicate the text. Then you can either “trim” the new text so it’s just the shadow parts and not the part underneath the original text too or what I do is usually to “contour” the original text aswell and then “weld” the contour shape to the drop shadow text so you then “overlay” your two vinyls and have a little tolerance for the positioning.Hope that makes sense ??

thanks i get it now , i need to practice designing signs and van liverys so when my cutter arrives and more importantly a customer rings i,m not left staring at the keyboard without a clue what to do!(then i,ll be asking for application tips)
