  • suggestions please for a tourist Boat trip sign?

Posted by Dave Bruce on 29 May 2004 at 13:37

Ok I have to come up with a sign for a tourist boat trip which takes people around islands to see seals/birds and to a castle then back. They have a really old sign handpainted very ’70s and want to modernise the look, I had subcontracted the design out to a graphic designer who has now let me down, hence this plea for help.

I could go the simple route and just put all the text (there is quite a bit)on a digital background, but feel something more unusual would be better and more interesting to the punters. My idea was to create an old pirates map of the islands the boat goes around, with larger sketches of the important items like seals/birds/castle, and show (via dotted line) the route taken "to the dungeons of the castle".

Unfortunately I am not that ‘graphical’, never used Photo Paint, only have Corel and Signlab(spit), I could trace photos of seals etc (infact I have done the castle already) to create a sketch effect, but I am really short of time and need some help, pleeeeeeease.

    Cheers

    Dave

    Good ideas, Dave….
    excellent to PAINT!
Do you paint, or know someone who does?
    Sounds like a fun job.
Cut out the “map” shape from plywood & prime it.
Faux-finish with 1-Shot & sponges to look “old”.
You can do the lettering in vynull, easy,
using a readable derivative of the dreaded Old English.
All you would have to do then (in 1-Shot)
are the smaller pictures of seals & castles, etc.
    Add a compass rose, etc.
Wish I was there to help.

That’s funny Jill I was thinking of you when I put the post on here, thought you would love to do it. I don’t paint, well not artistically anyway.

Thanks for the help, I’ll don the rigger boots and tight jeans and send a photo for that. 🙂

    Cheers

Only if your butt is as nice as Rob’s!
Man I think you could bounce a quarter off of it.
Seriously, even an idiot could sponge a background.
It’s so easy that it should be illegal to charge for it! 😉
Maybe you could sub out digital prints of the other stuff.
    Just a suggestion.
My friend in Cowdenbeath paints, I can PM you her phone #,
but it might be too far for her to travel. She is excellent.
Might be worth asking her. She’s a nice girl, not a nutter like me.

Sounds like something I should have a go of then 😉 😉
