Just got back from quoting at… you guessed it, a pub 😀 I felt obliged to try a pint or so, just for research purposes of course, and they were FREE!! 😮 I’m beginning to really love my job! 😀

What they want is vinyl that looks like paint (I can hear Jill cringing as I type this 😕 ). Obviously I’m not the worlds greatest with a paint brush anyway, only just started playing with poster paints and to be honest, my 5yr old can make a more attractive sign! 😳

My question isn’t really about making the vinyl look like paint, as this is virtually impossible. I can add highlights and rough edges to simulate the paint, but it’ll never look the same. What I wanted to ask, is there a set of fonts or similar that I can use to come up with the text. I was half tempted to try Brush Script (I can hear everyone cringing now! 😳 ) but I don’t think it’s going to look right.

Plus point is, even if my quote is refused, I got FREE beer! 😀 😀 😀 As they say, small things…. 😉

    Cheers, Dewi

What about using paint mask and really painting the text?

Is that relatively easy to do? I really am turning out to be a complete turnip when it comes to painting 😕

Dew, it’s easy to paint when using paintmask. The only question is what is the correct paint to use, and as Nik has pointed out it depends on the surface you are painting onto ?? There’s enough painty type experts on here – someone will surely be able to advise.

The backboard is going to be blackboard paint I think, much better than covering it in vinyl. Then the colours are to be pastel and bright colours, advertising a whole range of drinks and special offers.

Where would I get the paint mask thingy from Big G?

Cherwells page 7. I’m no expert on paint but I should think most things will stick to blackboard paint. I’ve put regular gloss paint onto it before, no probs.

    Dewi,
I am gonna come over there and clean your clock!
    (not really)
    Look in your Corel fontz….
do you have one called “Brophy” or “Brody”?
    It looks kinda hand-painted.
Or check out sites like Letterhead Fonts or Sign DNA
to purchase hand-painted alphabets on a CD.
    As for paint mask, nahhhhh.
It is as much work as cutting vynull
(comes on a roll, etc. & is plotted)
and then after you weed it, mask it, stick it, & paint it with a roller,
it lifts up anyway and it sux out loud.
Could you try cutting it out of a matte-type vynull?
(I mean, if it is going on a chalkboard, etc.)
Better yet, have them buy me a ticket & I will come over
across the pond and personally instruct you and whoever else
    the fine art of hand-lettering.
    Love…Jill 😉

I wholeheartedly agree with Jilly on the Letterheads fonts – they are the business. I’ve used paintmask with reasonable results, of course it’s a longer process than just vinyl or paint alone but I am not a paintbrush demon like you Jill. 🙂

Dewi here’s a job I did that has vinyl looking like a trad hand painted typeface, once you’ve done one its quite easy, and take up Pauls offer of some pointers on painting (so OK he’s a yorkie but don’t hold that against him 😆 😆 ) hey Paul next time you’re down here I wouldn’t mind a few tips either, the Batemans and Bycrofts sausage sarnies are on me (HP Sauce?)

Blimey, thank you Big G, Jill, Nik, Paul and Steve 😀

The customer has just been in (and realised that I have an horrendous hangover 🙁 ) I hadn’t had chance to put together a design for it, but I said there was possibly a way of doing it in paint. He’s leaving it with me, so I’m going to give it a whirl. If I mess up, presumably I can fall back on the vinyl side without loosing too much face with the customer.

Big G, checked Cherwell page 7, it was staring me in the face! 😀 Jill, I know what you mean, but you haven’t seen my freehand painting skills. I’m considering using my feet, I’d get better results 😉 Nik, you’re a star 😀 Paul, that’d be brilliant, I’ll PM across my details later on 😀 And Steve, I remember that one. Isn’t there a wooden guy standing outside it? Sausage butties! 😮 How many miles in Lincolnshire from Manchester again 😉 😉 😉

    Cheers, Dewi
