can i re-use a garge fore court sign?
Hi,
Ok, a couple of things here. My mate is moving to new premises and wants something like a garage forecourt price sign. When I told him how much the unit would cost here nearly freaked.
Which got me to thinking… where do all the old signs from places go?
Where do the plasti-coated sign poles go, the ones we concrete into the ground for road signs?
Where do old garage forecourt signs go? Petrol stations close all the time, or change hands, etc…. where does it all go?
I have been looking on ebay for large modular sign structures, but nothing.
Any ideas, let me know.

Seriously though, valid point. I’ve noticed a couple of garage forecourts shutting down, and the modular systems you’ve mentioned were removed. Be interesting to see where they go, like you say.
Might be a stupid suggestion here, but have you tried the buildings reclaimation yards local to you? There are a few in Manchester, but they mainly have old fireplaces, cast iron baths, restaurant furniture, things like that.

We had a Shell forecourt when we closed it down Shell came and removed signs, they used to have a central storage place probabley still do.

many are scarped. infact most are. but not all..
the sign poles you see are, i think. they dont cost much to begin with so having a damaged or rusty one would not only be unacceptable but dangerous.regarding the large forcourt signs. the maintenance companies that service the staitions sometimes sell them onto us if they are in good condition. still not cheap though & you have to find a company that wants the same hieght of sign and the panels the same size as the ones on the old forecourt.
lots of these signs are basicaly cut away at the bottom by cutting torch.
we did one of simular size last year, i just bought in the lenghs of steel, cut them to size and welded it all together. i then got a hi-ab truck rented with driver to take it to location were i had the holes already dug & concrete waiting for it.
the ones you see in forcourts are normaly differnet setup to this. they have steel reinforced frames in concrete blocks set in the ground with threaded pins sticking up. the forcourt sign is then lowered onto the pins and bolted into place. this means in future it can be removed/moved to another location more easily.
im certainly no expert on this, but there are cheaper easier adapted methods than getting one of these signs second hand.if your still set on buying one in ide cal (in scotland) companies like mansell maintenance, merson signs etc etc
