• Perspex Signs

    Hi folks,

I have to replicate some signs for a new customer and I’m not too sure how they have been done, so maybe you can help.

They are perspex, black with gold lettering (only small 250mm square). The gold has been applied to the reverse of the sign but the black is not vinyl and obviously is behind the gold.

Does that mean the black has been sprayed on over the gold, may be even the gold lettering is painted too, I’m not sure.

Don’t really want to put black vinyl over the gold as the wee air gap will show up too much, and make it look quite different. So could I do the above and spray the black over the gold on the back of the sign?

    Looking forward to some solution

    Dave

I’ve done it that way before and it worked fine. That is to say applied vinyl to back of a clear panel and then sprayed the background colour. Make sure you use a good vinyl (as any shrinkage in the future will leave a clear line around the letters) and spray the paint in many, very light coats. You could then, if you wanted, remove the vinyl and spray the gold letters on which would remove any possibility of the vinyl shrinking a bit as can sometimes happen.

No worries Dew. This is a good way of making a graffiti proof sign. The sign can be cleaned with many, fairly aggressive chemicals without damaging any lettering.

I’ve made a similar sign, black lettering on the back of a clear acrylic, but I then overlayed a silver vinyl, 651 series. It was a bit of a pain, but I managed it. It was for an off license where they needed to display the owners name. He was so pleased with it, I got a free bottle of wine. My kind of guy!!! 😀

Its the method of removing the vinyl once you’ve sprayed over the the top, never even considered doing that. It’d be brilliant with a masking vinyl, similar to those used for tank spraying. I’ve been meaning to try different techniques like this and also the demo Robert did on the magnetic spray templates.

Thanks Andy I’ll give it a go and see how it turns out. Love the idea of removing the letters and spraying gold, thanks a million.

Another thing I just thought of. It can be a good idea – especially if the panel is being screwed to a brick wall – to cover the back in 1 or 2 layers of vinyl to protect the paint from scratches.
