Vinyl removal from coach, best way?
Posted by Steve Thurlow on 22 March 2004 at 15:26Hi team,
I am quoting for vinyls on 3 coaches, 1 second hand coach has it’s old vinyl signage in place (dammit ๐ฅ ) and it needs removing. I hate the thought of removing old vinyl but this job seems worth it for a 1 off, but I am not going to invest in a stripping tool for 1 job.
So I wonder if anyone has info or ideas please, is there chemicals/spray for making this job easier? I will most probably use a heat gun to soften up the vinyls but is there an adhesive remover that can be used? Thanks, Steve

Thanks Dave,
Have you had any problem with this remover taking off the paint under the adhesive? Also approx how long does a can last for? I have to remove 2 names approx 4mts x 300mm + text on the back of the coach, I don’t think the job will stand 10 cans of this stuff ๐ฎ
Hexis? don’t think I know them, have you got a phone number please?
I think it’s the orangey smell that’s sold it for me ๐ mmmmm
cheers mate,
Steve

Sorry no havent had anyproblems with paint removal but dont tend to leave it on very long also id use a soapy soloution over the area afterwards to remove the glue remover prior to applying new graphics

I’ve used that orangey stuff. S’alright but being very mean I use white spirit which seems to have the same effect, only slower.

Thanks Dave, all sounds very easy ๐
Just rang Hexis & a very helpful young lady told me what’s available. Not 3M though, this stuff comes in 2Lt & 5Lt bottles, applied by sponge.
Film remover & an adhesive remover, 5Lts of each adds up to 100 quid ๐ฎ
hmmmm , (and not a mention of an orangey smell) to be honest I thought it would be this sort of price, what your paying for is the time saved, instead of 2 days with a heat gun & white spirit hopefully this stuff could do it’s magic in half a day.
I will quote on using these chemicals & if it’s a goer I’ll scout round the Sign Show next week to see what else is available before purchasing.Anyone else got any ideas on this sticky problem??

Thanks Big GEE,
White spirit’s OK if you can soak it, leave it, then soak again, also if it was horizontal would help, but a side of a coach! think of the mess ๐ฅ
What I need is something like a pressure washer + chemicals, one squirt onto the vinyls & it all falls off…. vinyls…. adhesive….. & leaves the surface clean & degreased ready for the new vinyls to be applied right away ๐ easy peesy ๐ ๐

hi steve
try my demo on vinyl removal.. the demo is based on extreme cases like reflective.
if its just regular vinyl do a test, heat it a little and peal. if it leaves glue heat it right up hot hot hot… peal a bit if no glue at all then apply lots of heat. be careful though. if it is branded in a good vinyl and its not a cold day. it sometimes just strips with little bits of glue here and there.. no heat needed.the best glue remover i know of is tar & glue remover for vehicles.
get it from most auto valet suppliers. 5 letres about ยฃ10 or so.. maybe less ๐ lasts for months.. just dab it onto the area with glue, leave it a few mins then with a little more on a cloth wipe/rub it away. ๐doesnt do anyt damage to paintwork what so ever.

now dont all jump up and down but the best quickest readly available glue cleaner i have found is petrol
it don’t damage the paint cos people spill it all over there car at the pumps
but common sense prevails when using it.chris

very true mate.. ๐
have to say though, ๐ i dont fancy handing one of guys a can of petrol to strip glue. by the end they would be high as a kite or “blown up” by the cigarette hanging out their mouth. ๐ฎ ๐ ๐ ๐

Hi Steve..
I have done a few coaches in my time… If itโs a new coach you shouldn’t have much trouble removing vinyl, but if its an old bus, they normally have had a cheap spray job to tidy them up for selling, then the signs are add by the new owner.
When you remove the vinyl.. Whatever method you use the paint normally comes off.
Make sure you tell your client this and you cannot be held responsible if it does happen. Or you could end up having the bus re-sprayed at your expense.Simon
