  • Qualifications and CSCS card

In another post the subject of further education (signmaking courses) has cropped up, now with the fear of upsetting the BSGA I am not a great lover of the current NVQ qualification even though I teach it, mainly because of the paperwork it generates and by far preffered the City & guilds qual. But and there is a big but. Recently the sign indutry has been included in the CSCS card scheme. For anyone who as never heard of this the CSCS card is issued to all construction opperatives and this allows them access and entry onto construction sites, NO CARD NO ACCESS. Now I dont know how many companies this will effect but I for one have done work for builders putting up health and safety signs, site office signs and general site signs. Of late I have been asked for my CSCS card and untill I applied for it I was having to supply signs only and was loosing out on the installation cost. What constitutes a building site? A shop being refurbished has to adhere to Health and safety legislation and if a site manager is appointed he will want to see a CSCS card, so potentialy we could all eventually be affected, even tendering for work for intenal/external signage you could be asked if you hold a card as part of the tender proccess.
Have any others come up against this or what are your thoughts. Will everyone in the industry have to obtain a level 2 qualification? or will you just not take on any work that involves being on a designated site.

Hi peter many good points on that link and Don Dunthorne Is totaly correct but my point Is that it is now in force and there is no way round it. Because I work for a BSGA accredited center I have to attend the annual conference and can remember having many discussions about cscs as far back as 2000. Now because the Grandfather rights has passed where you could simply be signed off because of your passed experience, the only way to obtain a cscs card it to have some kind of formal training in health and safety and take a test, if however you take the NVQ2 qual h&s is already built in so you automaticaly qualify for the cscs card.
