Hello there
Posted by Steve T on 31 December 2003 at 13:02Hello everyone,
I joined before Christmas but haven’t had the time until now to sit down and introduce myself.
I too am a self taught signmaker who still has alot to learn. I run part time and hope one day to make this my full time work.
I have been going approximately two years.
I find the board a great source of varied information and look forward to being a part of this community.Happy New Year to you all 😆

Here’s a BIG Redneck welcome from Butler County, PA!
Home of trailer parks, mullets, “Butlerites”, and summer teeth.
(notice how I’m hiding mine in that photo!) 😳
If you ever want a quick tour, go to
http://www.butlereagle.com
That’s our local newspaper.I myself am self-taught, too, Steve.
And what a long strange trip it’s been!
I started 18 years ago & became a Letterhead 10 years ago.
I am a painter first and got a cruddy ancient Gerber 4B
powered by a Dell & Graphix Advantage software in 1998.
I just installed a used Corel 9 on my system & it scares the
beejesus outta me! But I vow to learn it so I can posts stuff here.I hope you & yours have a happy & prosperous 2004! *drink*

As Dewi says, Welcome on board Steve… You won’t find a better place for friendly and informed advice than here so make good use of it !
What do you do in the rest of your work time – I started my business part time 11years ago and over the first two years gradually moved more towards my own business. Everybody was sceptical at the time and basically said they thought it was a bad idea, but I havn’t looked back since and although I still work from a studio at home, I think this business is a great one to be in. I really enjoy the variety of different jobs you can get asked to do, keeps me from getting bored with the same old routine every day.
I think if you are good at your job, confident in your own abilities and can “talk” with customers in a friendly (and knowledgable) way then you can’t fail to make a success of going it alone.Glad you joined the team !

Hi Steve and welcome to the boards, as everyone has already said you will be able to learn as much or as little as you like from the site.
Do you promote your sign business at all or just do jobs for people that know you and ask? -
Hi Steve
Welcome, from one self-taught to another.
Sure we will see many messages from you.
Kind regards
Alan

Thank you everyone for the very warm welcome!
Someone asked what I did with the rest of my time and I help to manage a local wine store.
Like you Jillbean, I began with a Gerber 4B (still got it) but have managed to move onto a SumaD60.
Most of the work I have done up to now has been by word of mouth but advertising is an aspect I am looking into.Anyway I look forward to our future posts 😛
