Hello all, I joined this great site yesterday and look forward to logging on with alarming frequency in the future…

A small bit about myself… I have been involved in signage for 15 years, specialising in Digital Dynamic Signage for the last 4 years. I worked for HB Signs for awhile, then left to manage the Selfridges signage department for a number of years. I progressed to coordinate the amazing multi-screen Selfridges plasma signage display system.

I am now putting myself through University, doing a BA (Hons) Digital Media, specialising (of course!) in Digital Signage, and will graduate in Summer 2004. I also recently obtained a BSGA certificate (and was Awarded for Excellence) in Signmaking in my spare time.

Thats it really. Thats me. Hope you all have a good Christmas and New Year, and I look forward to getting to know some of you in the future.

Most of us don’t appear to bite 🙄 ( I hope anyway )

Seriously though, sounds like you’ve had some really cool experience so far, what do you have planned for when you graduate next year ?

    all the best

Well, thanks for the hellos so far… what am I going to do after graduation? Well, I aim to get involved more with Digital, along the lines of the Coca Cola billboard in Leicester Square. Its the way forward in my opinion, and with the technology advancing as fast as it is, and the prices consequently dropping, its just a matter of time. Any thoughts on that?

a big wlecome from me too mate… glad you found us.. 😛

your line of work is very interesting.. not sure if any regulars here are involved in that type of signage.
i dont know if i know the sign in leceister square you talk of.. is it simular to the ones in piccadilly circus?
i do agree this is the way forward.. and yes.. billboard advertising with this type of stuff is already on the increase.

are you talking of selling these signs, or making then leasing advertising space at prime loacation sites?

    Hi Robert,

I actually meant Piccadilly Circus!! I am always doing that… one day I will remember that they are not one and the same!

So how do see my future in this digital signage? Well, as mentioned I have had experience in system installation for Selfridges, and have subsequently designed content for that system. However, going forward I imagine I will have to concentrate on the consulting and management side of things.

The large billboard companies already own the prime sites, and the hardware is an area being locked down rapidly by a few large manufacturers and suppliers. Furthermore, the design on such systems moves away from being traditional signage as we recognise it, and heads into multimedia broadcast design.

You are right too, digital is on the increase. The delay in acceptance has been directly linked to expensive hardware costs, but these are decreasing at tremendous rates. I fear for the long term future of good ole board and vinyl, although predict that we have a way to go yet before we reach a point where it is not needed at all.

Of course there will always be applications where traditional signage cannot be replaced, but the more customers see of high definition broadcast systems, the more they will demand in terms of quality and impact from traditional signage. So should I fail in making any headway in digital, at least let me a designer of QUALITY signage!!

    Hi K

A big welcome to the site
You’ll soon get used to the mob

It’s interesting what you say about digital and I do believe a lot on the board may well agree with you. We need to keep pace with progress as far as our purse will permit.

It’s also true that there is plenty of work across the board of signage because it is so diverse from the brush to digital, so that one does not necessarily have to go into extinction because of another. I do believe that they can coexist.

    Keep posting!

    Pleased to meet you, K…
I actually saw Piccadilly Circus this August!
It was quite surreal for me having only ever seen it on TV.
Just like Stonehenge, it was smaller than I thought.
    But the signs were awesome.
I myself am new here, but I want to extend a friendly hello.
    Love- JILL
