  • Signatures….or shop info

I recently had a problem trying to contact Becky over his heatpress, pm’s are OK if people are on line.

Just read a post by Lorraine on posting things on her site.

This is great, but she has no clickable link to her site, Becky has no numbers or shop info as a “Signature”. This is the case with lots of people.

It used to be great to be able to access “profiles” and go in and then you could call people or mail directly, since that function has been switched off for quite awhile now, if you need to contact someone abit quicker there’s no way unless you know their business name etc:

I got help from Mike the Sign with Becky….could have been the difference of buying the heatpress or losing out 🙂

Possibly the profile thing is switched off as a security measure? At times its really useful in the absence of other info in posts…

This is just an observation…and not critisism 🙂

    Hi Henry,

I have no clickable link as i used to have the web-site for the company i used to work for. I don’t have my own website up and running as yet although i do have a domain name and some free web space.
Must get that sorted out now i have all this spare time 😆

I’ve found the little group of buttons at the bottem a little confusing. I understood the profile bit and obviously email and www, but what does AIM mean? And theres a couple that appear on other ppls that are confusing also. Also, how can you display images in the signature bit? Is that allowed? Should I be reading a help file at this point? 😆

I like the idea of using signature bit to display basic info Henry, all I need now is the basic info to put in there 🙂

    Cheers, Dewi

    Hi Dewi,

The other buttons relate to chat/messaging software.
MSN = microsoft messenger (quite a few of us use this)
    AIM = AOL instant messenger
ICQ = is a chat channel, never used so can’t elaborate
    Y = yahoo messenger

you can add pictures to your signature but the picture will need to be hosted on the web somewhere. just use the Img button at the top of the post a reply page.

    Hi Henry
Due to a slight problem mate, profile access is not available.
I meant to send you details henry. Sorry mate!
I did post details of this in the UKSG member’s area but obviously this wont help you..
There are a few reasons why profile access came about in the first place. The main one was clowns from other sites pinching folk’s details on this site and using them on others.
When doing so, they made bad remarks on these sites and blackened the names of the person that had details stole. Then there are the suppliers that register solely for the purpose of spamming people to sell them stuff..
Ive had a few complaints over the last couple of years from users that this has happened too & I 100% agree it should not happen, but this is the Internet.. What can you do?
I see my end of the deal is to protect their details in anyway I can.. it’s the least I can do If I require full details to be given before I let them use the site.
With this in mind I have dropped the member’s list and may not be bringing back profile Access. Well not until I know of a way for better security.

Emailing using the link buttons provided is the best way to contact anyone on the site.
If that person being contacted is being spammed or sent a virus etc then I can find out who sent the email at the click of a button.
I haven’t allowed users to post their details as a signature due to the fact that all the links are available already beneath each post. If I miss a signature with personal details in it, and that person gets spammed, virus sent to them, bogus registrations on other sign site or worse then that’s not my problem anymore. I’ve done my bit..
Its not that I mind, I just hate opening an email to have someone point the finger at me
When really it has nothing to do with me..

so having said all that mate.. your right about it being a security measure.
if only more could be trusted with info like this as i do you and various others that i gave profile access too.. there is always some people that dont give a damn about spoiling things for others… 😕

    Thanks for that Lorraine.

Robert, I never even thought of it like that. I don’t usually give any details out on the web for the reasons you’ve listed above. I only contacted a one supplier and gave them my old fax number and we were plagued for months by promotional offers through the fax. Its a real shame that profiles have been abused in that way, spoils it for ppl who would use it for more genuine purposes.

    Cheers, Dewi

The other thing thats a pain about not having the profile group.

I was just trying to send a PM to someone, i had to try and remember where they had posted last so i could call up the post to pm them, normally i just click on their name to the left of the home page and PM from there

Would it not be possible to make the link of persons name go directly to PM rather than profile? I know its a bit wierd but it might come in useful. Security wise, it’s be a brave marketeer who would go through every single post, clicking on every single name just to copy&paste some advertising blurb. No personal info would be shown, and the members listy thingy could be reinstated for PM purposes only.

Just a thought from an overactive imagination (blown-up)

    Cheers, Dewi

I liked the profiles for the same reason, its a pain trawling through all the posts looking for a certain person so you can contact them 🙁 how’s about restricting it to certain levels of membership or after a certain time period/number of posts (?)
