STRAIGHT STRIPES
Posted by IAN HARTLEY on 21 May 2003 at 21:52I have to do a coach, most of the graphics are straight forward. however I have to do a great many 4inch wide stripes. Do I just practice untill I “get my eye in” ?. Pinstripes I have no problem with but wider ones never look as perfect. any ideas ?

Funny I have more problems with pinstripes than widder stripes, dont know if it is the right way to do it but we always run a line of masking tape along where the stripe is to go, you can then check along the masking tape line from one end to see if it is straight, if not make any adjustments. When you are happy the masking tape line is OK you then have a guide to run the vinyl along. Seems to work for us but dont know if there is an easier or better way to do it. We tried pouncing a chalk line but the line kept coming out quite wide as the chalk spread out and this made it quite hard to follow.

Hi Martin
Thanks for your reply, perhaps I am being to critical of myself, I can see if a stripe is only 1mm out on a 10ft run. When doing the side of a truck or coach with twin stripes a very slight deviation becomes just noticable to me.
I do use masking tape to get the line. Would you put application tape onto a broad strip or would you just take it of the backing as you go ?.
I sometimes use a chalk line to get a line but then put on pencil or tipex marks for the line and then wipe of the chalk.
By the way does every one else use coloured masking tape on light coloured surfaces?. Dark blue is great on light surfaces when trying to see through the appli. tape. Duck tape ond Crown do this stuff but it is a bit dear however I often find it for 50p in clearance bins in Focus diy stores.
