I was contacted today by a prominent local firm I have been trying to hook as a client for months today. Great I hear you all say, but, they are now looking for something I have little or no experience in. They used the sign company they have always used in the past to produce a new sign and to say its poor is to be kind.

The sign is a wall mounted 10 foot long by 4 foot high perspex type, gloss plastic ish, panel within a plastic frame with flat cut 3mm white perspex type letters bonded to the front. OK sounds ok but they have a joint down the middle of the sign, right slap in the middle. The plastic frame is not the same as the panel and to make matters worse the frame is obviously too tight for the panel which kind of looks pregnant!

some points which I would love to hear your advice on are:

Where, if possible can I get a glossy finished flat panel for the background? Is it possible to get a sheet slightly bigger than the existing, they have had the wall painted around the sign and it is not even square!

Is it possible to either fit the panel without the frame, I wondered about fixing it mechanically and then bonding some of the letters over the fixing holes?

Is it possible to have a metal frame powder coated by someone to match the back panel?

What type of adhesive should I use to bond the letters, where can i get hold of it?

I actually spoke to the client about using an aluminium tray instead of a frame and panel sign and he is ok about this.

What are you thoughts regarding this job.

    Many thanks for your help,

    Stuart

use a sheet of rynabond, alucolour.. from amari or europoint.
you can buy it in black and comes in various sizes so you can have it all in one peice. no joins!
then use black finish panatrim, fix it to the wall and just slide the panel into it.. no fixings shown at all..

    as for the letters,
if it must be flat cut letters, just atach with a VHB tap or some other high bonding double sided tape to the rear of the letters.

personaly i think 3mm flat cut stuck on face is a bit of a waste. coax him out of it & offer vinyl.. show him the price difference & also say with the vinyl you can change the info anytime. with the flat cuts your stuck for good… 😉

    Thanks for that Robert

I agree with the vinyl letters but he wants a “quality sign not that sticker crap” but like you say we can gice him the chance to see the two costs.

I should have said the sign has to be pantone072 in colour and this is whats helping to make it a pain.

Does anyone know if you can powder coat panatrim framing, its anodised so I am unsure whether this will be possible.

    cheers Rob

Stuart – You certainly can powder coat Aluminium signtrim. I’ve bought this on a number of occasions. I’m not sure if it starts out as “Mill finish” or “Silver Anodised” signtrim – but you must be able to get your choice of extrusion in a Mill finish if this is the only finish that will accept powder coating.

I’ve also covered trim with vinyl to give a coloured finish – quite time consuming and only practical on fairly short signframes

sorry mate i miss read this as “black” panel.. so not only cant i spell i now cant read 😮 😮 😡 .

phills right.. powder coating the aluminium trim can be done. if you going to the extreme of colour matching then why not just use aluminium face also.. get them to colour match the sheet & trim.. problem solved 😉

if they want the flat cut then fair enough.. VHB tape will do the job.

Hey maybe you canny spell or read but I am gtareful for your help on this. I have contacted a powder coating company who will do both the ally panel and the trim in the required shade.

Seem very cheap to me at £8.00 square meter?

Where do I get VHB tape, I know its not cheap.
