does other people not need to put your name forward mate?
merson picked up an award last year yeh? -
didnt know there was such a thing, though i suspect as with the trade shows, that its prop more print orientated these days !
 -
yeh, just had a look… merson did win, good for them. about time too…
active picked up a couple.. another major player.

yeh spotted the entry forms etc, not sure where i was getting that. :lol1:

I don’t think that anyone on here should be ashamed to put their work forward for an award, a lot of what is posted on here shows more flair and creativity than what you’ll see the retailers putting up in the High Street (I’d love to see some of Jill or Stevo’s stuff in front of the judges!!)
More small independent sign makers should be represented in the sign awards, they make up a significant portion of the industry yet are underepresented within the BSGA – thank god for UKSB!
 -
a lot of “awards” depend on who is backing the prize, and for what reason.
I would like to see a uksb award for
1, design
2,achievment etc…I would consider this more prestigious to win, or enter, simply because it could be judged by peers, not people trying to promote a product or magazine,

thanks peter…
some may remember, i looked at doing this last year.
it could easily be knocked up in time for signuk, but knocking it up for the sake of doing it, isnt really what i have in mind. it would have to be done right, proper venue, proper awards etc etc. im not going to say ill have a think about it for signuk, i just have too much planned for the coming months. maybe later in the year, september?… that way there is more focus on our awards rather than been smothered in the magazine pages dedicated to the show and the industry awards all going on at the same time. -
Last year some smaller companies also won the big prizes like Sign of the Times. I think the smaller companies believe they’d have no chance if they entered, but if the project is good enough then it’s good enough.

Guys – the sign awards are open to anyone from the Sign Industry big or small. Some of the best work out there comes from the smaller sign company or independents.
All I would say is take some time to take descent pictures, a great sign or vehicle graphic can look very average if the photograph is poorly taken or there is a lot of background clutter. If you’re not in it you can’t win it

If you look at the website (link further up) it says the judging is blind
3. All judging is BLIND because this is the fairest way.
The judges do not know who each entry is from until after they have made their choice of the winner.
This is achieved through the careful editing of all information provided to remove the name and any other clue to who each entrant is. All other information submitted by entrants is presented to the panel in a stylised format.
Please do not prepare special presentation folders or brochures. These will not be seen by the judges (at least not until they have made their decision).I would imagine that this means the size of company is not a consideration but the quality of project.
Also what Craig said.
Robert (or anyone) do you think that an awards show away from Sign UK would be be better? Would people turn up specifically for an Awards event?

Over here, two of the main sign mags have design/sign contests.
(One has a separate vehicle contest)
Usually the winners are those who build dimensional signs.
There are a few catagories to keep things fair and equal for all.
They are judged blindly by other sign makers.
In 1996 or 7 I got a runner-up in Sign Business magazine’s contest.
It was only a 4×8 painted aluminum sign.
But boy was I ever proud!
I didn’t even have a computer then.
I got a T-Shirt and an extra copy of the magazine.
I still have that mag somewhere.
Love….Jill -
I’ve been lucky enough to travel to the ISA show in the good old “US of A” a few times now and the quality of work from design sketch through to final design all seem to come into play with their awards…so Jill you are right to be proud of being placed, well done.
I’ve also been to the UK awards and have to say they seem to be getting better and better, with a real broad-brush of companies putting their work forward.
Looking at the link posted above I’ve copied and pasted the categories that you can enter onto the thread:-
Awards will be presented in a number of categories covering:
(• Illuminated Signs • Digital Signs • Interior Signs • Vehicle Liveries • Commercial Signs • Retail Signs • Wayfinding Signs • The Small Signmaker of the Year • Craftmanship in Signmaking • The Sign Student of the Year • Sign Design
• Innovation in Signmaking Materials and Equipment • Sign Business of the Year
• Special Achievement in the Sign Industry). As I said earlier give it a go, ‘cos you can’t win it if you ain’t in it.

Has anyone given entering anymore thought? I think the closing date isn’t to far away now.

we have sign awards here run by our sign association in Oz. I will be entering this year as they have categories for eveything.
Not sure how I’ll go, but I am confident that I’m good enough that I will not be laughed at.
Last year I was a little unimpressed with some of the entries, not that they were no good, but I felt I had done better jobs in the same category.
No harm done if you don’t win tho, just a bit of fun. I am not a competative person, so if i do win it is definately going to be a bonus.
The awards here are for the shop that did the job, and they also award the client who you di dthe job for. Pretty good idea I’d say.
I doubt I’d win against some of our wrappers here, because I’m so new at it, but I’m going to enter the currumbin job in the wrap category, but the others will be in the computer cut categories.
Give it a go if you have the chance……

Good luck Shane – there’s absolutely no harm in having a go, and imagine how proud you’ll feel if you win – not to mention the kudos and free publicity you’ll get 😛

yeah james, Im doing it for my Oracal distributors too. I think Australian Graphic Supplies here are the best in the industry, really supportive and I’d like to repay them by waving the Oracal flag too. Sounds corny, but AGS bend over backwards to help you do the job right, and it is just giving something back for their support.
