Why are you avoiding the MD5 air release?

Hi Hugh. I’ve had 3 failures in the 12 months approximate use of MD5 air release.

The explanation from Metamark was not very concrete and satisfactory. It was all maybe this, maybe that. I’m not going to miss it much.

All failures where on vehicles glass panels. (Side and back)

    quote Iain Pearson:

    Afternoon Pane
It depends on your customers terminology
If its going on to glass which i suspect it is being a semi transparent, they could possible be talking about
    an opal frost.
Might be worth having a conversation with them to determine what the vinyl needs to do 🙂

    Thanks Iain.

    I will offer 3 option:

    1) Frost
    2) Translucent white
    3) Normal white

I do know the Arlon Silver Etch.

Does is stretch or scratch? If yes, I will use application tape.

I haven’t used application tape for plain frost so far. Ever for the sparkly, notoriously expensive 3M frost with crystals.

    quote Simon Worrall:

Transit is all over the place.

For this lwb transit I made sure all the tyres were equally pumped and used a laser level.
The floor is level in my workshop.
Seemed to work out as good as anything else!

When I said “I do it like Simon” I was referring to a white line I see on the photo of the van. I didn’t read the text.

I now look carefully and I think this is metal wire.

I measure from the seal. Every time.

Two identical marks on each end marked from the seal. Using 2 magnets or two pieces of tape I stretch piece of string. (I could use my laser, but string is faster) I then alight all items to this string.

Unless client insist, all graphics are done from seal.

    Like Robert does it:

In my opinion this is not about pleasing some and not pleasing some folks. It is about doing it right. I strongly believe this is the right way [emoji6]

Regards removable, I’ve found they stick just as well as permanent adhesive, its only when you come to remove it, you really notice the benefits.

You could stick some perm laminate over any joins, and slit when you come to remove.

I hope so David. No joints, so that’s a plus.

    Thank you all.

I only have Metamark translucent swatch. I think you will struggle on this one

  • quote Martyn Heath:

    Hi pane.
Cant see why anyone would peel the print off the glass but for your piece of mind you could seal the edges by running a 20mm strip of normal vinyl around the edge of the print to seal the removable vinyl?

That will make it looking less sharp and tidy, so I will not go down that route.

  • quote David Hammond:

A word of warning, check with the shopping centre, that they allow vinyl/graphics on the external window.

    From experience, some don’t.

Got everything in writing to install on the outside.

  • quote Graham Scanlan:

    Hi Pane

Read the spec of the standard removable and you may find that there is no guarantee for adhesive free removability, so there maybe some glue removal required. With the ultra removable you should get adhesive Free removability

    Hi Graham,

It is not a problem if I need to clean up after I have removed the print. I’m more than ok with that.

My main worry is the performance of the "Orajet 3628 super removable" during the time print is up / applied on the outside of the store.

Same here. I always test print and noozle check on a cheap mono. When ready for print, load the expensive stuff.

The rest of your question: I never look at it that way. Client pays for waste, not me.

I think a fair decision is to do nothing. You made this sign 4 years ago and it’s still doing its job. I think you’re over reacting to what was probably a teasing comment. I certainly wouldn’t be re doing the sign.
    quote Kevin Mahoney:

If you painted your front door & four years later it’s faded slightly, you wouldn’t demand your money back would you? If the vinyl had bleached out completely then fair comment but if you’re asked to install a sign that’s in direct sunlight all day then it isn’t down to you when it fades a little .

If she said that comment with a smile or a smirk I would not taken it seriously. But she insisted I go and see her on site.

I’m thinking in similar direction. 300k Ferrari will fade, and yet folks don’t expect free polish.

I’ve made my decision. Will not change the vinyl on the sign free of charge.

Thank you for your messages gentlemen.

This is similar call like “emailing EPS file to client”

    1) Dear client, we require x £ for emailing / releasing you your logo in EPS. Client is maybe upset and maybe goes elsewhere in future.

    2) Or in this case, dear client, the vinyl is still up to scratch and I cannot offer free replacement…. and client maybe goes elsewhere.

To me main objective here is not about balancing if this is a big or small client and being afraid of losing it.

It is more about doing the right thing / a fair decision.

    quote David McDonald:

    Hi

We purchased a Kongsberg X series a few months back and we can’t praise it enough, conveyor version with the 3-tool multicut head including the router. Dearer than the F-series 16/12 but bigger and more capabilities – highly recommend taking a look. Whichever model/brand you go for within 24-hours you’ll be thinking how on earth did you ever manage without it. The performance of the Kongsberg is faultless, perfect, fast, trouble free – it’s intuitive to use and the overall quality and engineering of the unit is something to marvel at! (you can tell we like it)

In the last month we’ve cut over 4000 square metres of vinyl on it, 100’s of boards of correx / PVC, rolls and rolls of banner and poster and we’ve only just changed a blade. We’d have been working round the clock otherwise.

    Cheers
    Dave

I just watched this fantastic machine Kongsberg X series on YouTube. Will this machine polish acrylic to final finish specs? Will this mean Kongsberg X series will do the same as laser will do?

  • I made an offer for a banner.

The next email was “I will think about it” and then can you send me my logo in EPS…

Select artwork. Send to OPOS cut.

    GREAT! Not.
Just when I tough I solved the problem by opening in Corel Draw and saving prepress PDF. Created a much lighter PDF and PC was ripping. Looked good. Sent to print. 2h + later and over 20m vinyl printed at banner speed I realised that blue is too dark. Coreldraw changed the approved colour. What a waste of a long day this was, never mind the vinyl and the ink.

I have used the dorotape tape one.
Cut shapes on a hair salon in London many years ago. Looked pretty cool.

In this case, my client asked for the 3M one.

  • quote Martyn Heath:

Ive been having trouble with my clear app tape, when layering vinyl. Usually layering text with an outline, i use a dusting of soapy water just to take the edge off the vinyl tack so it can be repositioned. However the clear tape is way too tacky, pulls it straight off.

Tape is rtape clear choice medium tack. Now not sure if it was like this from the beginning or as the roll has got older its got worse. Its probably a year and half old now. I buy a 1220 100m log and have it cut down the middle so this is the second log.

What do you guys use? is there a better low tack option?

One good thing about having no work in these times, trying to sort out all the little issues.

    24 years of application tape.
Paper application tape = water application
Clear application tape = dry application

Clear application tape doesn’t soak liquid, hence I always apply dry.

Hi Glen. I don’t think you will have that kind of lockdown. After you do your shopping round, go to your office and do clean heads if you are unable to do this remotely.

  • Swiss corona cases still rising. We are now the highest in the world for cases per 1m citizens. Ticino canton in South Switzerland still on its knees. UK corona situation is still behind 2-3 weeks. This is not a joke. Self isolation / social distancing is a must, so that the NHS has more time and less stress to deal with cases.

Write to you local MP regarding your financial situation not being covered in current laws. It is difficult time and rules and laws are created as they go. Stay safe and positive.

I personally don’t believe in non-laminated print, therefore print and cut mashine is a big NO for me. If you are aiming at vehicle graphics, non laminated graphics will create unhappy customers.

    I have them as separate:

    Printer
    Laminator
    Cutter

I have a Mutoh. I’m surprised not many people have Mutoh. My second Mutoh.

I guess it will all depend on your business model. I do not print big quantities, my ValueJet 1624 is not fast, but everything that gets out of the workshop is top quality.

2k budget is low for separate machines, that’s another issue.

Imagine all those at home who are on lockdown and refused to come to the hospital. The real numbers are much higher.

  • It will all come down to free hospital bed. This virus spreads much faster than fly.

Message from a specialist doctor at intensive care in small town:

“Many people above 80 will die. Many of us will be ok.

If you are 70 and you have corona virus, you have good chance to live, if I have free bed for you.

If you are 60 and you have a stroke, you have good chance to live, if I have free bed for you.

If you are 50 and you require prostate surgery, you have good chances to live, if I have free bed for you.

If you are 40 and you had a car accident, you have good chances to live, if I have free bed for you.

If you are 30 and you have complications with your pregnancy, you have good chances to live, if I have free bed for you.

If you are 20 and you had overdose, you have good chances to live, if I have free bed for you.

We have 7 bed with full respiratory ventilators. We can go up to 25 of them. To get more is not mater of money, we also need medical staff and bigger hospital.

If 50% of my town is infected, that is 75.000 people. If 5% need intensive care, thats 3750 people. And we have 25 beds.

Most probably I will not have free bed for you.

Lets avoid peak season. Self isolate. Stay at home.”

  • quote Phill Fenton:

It’s madness – the whole world has taken leave of its senses egged on by the WHO. Companies and even nations are being ruined and will go bankrupt by the entire over re-action and panic. The damage being caused to the economy is far worse than the virus.

I know it’s become a cliche – but the reality is, since January more people have died in the world as a result of the flu virus than the Corona virus. World leaders need to keep a perspective on things. Personally I think the UK is doing a better job of keeping a lid on things than most.

Madness has two end. Northern Italy and South Switzerland (canton Ticino) where laughing and telling jokes about the virus a week ago. Local politicians where telling people to wash their hands. (Joke) 70000 Italian workers where crossing the border every day going back to infected towns. Within a week jokes transformed into apocalyptic nightmares. Town majors from Lugano and Locarno overruled the federal government and ordered mass closing of every public household. This is not known to happen. But this saved lives. There is not much know about this virus… Rest of Switzerland is drinking coffees and gathering in groups, jokes in Central Switzerland are around every morning. This is why Switzerland is No.2 in the world with corona cases. I will write you in a week to confirm if Central Switzerland’s jokes have become reality nightmares. Because honestly, nobody gives a sh*t at moment. People go in their lives as normal, but 100miles south we have a declared “state of emergency”

There you go. I’m not Daily Mail, CNN or a fake news site. I have friends who live Ticino and work in Ticino hospital. It is scary at the moment. And yet, we don’t know nothing about the virus.

Hi Hugh. We have different printers (I have Mutoh 1624x) and I doubt that I will help, but I like to share my approach.

I use one profile for most of my printing. (Used agency proof to match to and spend around 5h one day + few meters of vinyl , and since quite happy with results)

I print all my work on 720×1440 Arlon profile. Very rarely I use 720×720 Arlon but that is shaky and leaves banding and staines on certain vector or jpg files, hence I stick to my custom 720×1440 Arlon profile.

I dont print a lot, but everything that comes out of my shop is high quality on banner, canvas, paper etc.

I used to struggle a lot with print quality. So far I have spent minimum of 15-20h to test printing profiles with old roll of vinyl laying around. It helped me a lot to know my printers capabilities.

Thanks for posting your video Clive, always good to watch other sign companies do their stuff!

If doing a wall or vehicle at this sort of length, a tip is to tape the panel into place and work from the middle up, then middle down with each panel. It is a slower process for each panel install, but really helps maintain the graphics are running consistently straight. as you may know, it is so easy to have a panel running slightly skew by only 1mm or 2mm and by the time you have a few more panels in place it starts to run up or down.

anyway, you appear to have managed just fine! thanks for sharing mate.

I hear scenarios that pound will be kept with the euro so UK trades better with Europe, but on the other hand if I know this for sure, I will be typing this from my yacht in Barbados.
I hope things stay the same and not much changes, but politicians are liars so only time will tell.

It does take a lot longer to put together than you would expect. Trim and mounting wise prob get through about 10 pop ups an hour once there printed. This ended up taking me most of the day and it was only 6 pieces. Still worth itnt

    I was thinking the same.
After it finished printing I was under impression that will complete in 2h.
But I was wrong. Took around 6h. Will take me even longer to improve.

    Hi Chris,
    Thanks for writing.
I’m 90grams lighter, hence the wrinkles.
Will go back today. Remove magnets, laminate and then see the results.
If you are taking your pull up stand down, please email photos of the top hanger and the bottom kicker part.

Mistakes I might of done today on my first pop up stand project:

Missing original accessories would of helped a lot.

I think laminating the print would of given me more rigid print.
Do you agree? Do you laminate your pop up stands?

The magnet has curved the print slightly. Far from disappointed, but need to improve.

Appreciate if you join the discussion. Need to do tide up the stand over the weekend for Monday show.

If MD5 performs identical as Orajet 3551 I’m considering swap.

Why I’m I asking this question here?
Reading what manufacturers say and what is reality is two different things.

Used Metamark perforated vinyl with optical clear laminate for years.

Changed to Oracet perforated with its own optical clear.

On the Oracal bundle, application marks are seen many months after the application.

On Metamark perforated with optical clear film, these application marks disappear after a week or so.

Before I do another migration, want to do some research.

  • If MD5 performs identical as Orajet 3551 I’m considering swap.

This happens to me when vinyl is loose on the mashine. Happens to the letter further away from the roller. Therefore I always cut bigger objects in the first line and then detailed work further down the roll where the vinyl roll will fall in the front basket and create a good tension.
Taping a off cut vinyl piece in the front before the mashine start also helps to have tension.

As above – or by using discarded backing paper from vinyl or laminate.
I use transparent backing paper / film from Oracal optical clear laminate.
Place paper on the van with magnets.
Run a pencil line and draw the panel shape.
    Cut on you table.
Place paper template on your van and make sure you are happy with.
Place template over your graphics and cut following your template. (I’m doing this right now)

I simply go mad when I need to chaise the money I’ve made with hard work.
Last week I went to remove a wall wrap. Client did not pay since October.
Half of my family and friends where saying that what I’m doing might get me into trouble?
    Why?
I’m not the non – payer!
    I shall not be ashamed.
Non-paying client needs to be ashamed and in trouble.
What a mess of judgment on a society level!
I just want my sticker back. Doesn’t matter the fact that the stickler will go in the bin. (luckily she paid when I turned up)
I’m fully aware that with that trip to her studio I’ve wasted money / time, but I did not want her to have free wall wrap.

I’m thinking of having this on my invoice:
    "
All goods remain the property of "ABC SIGNS" until the invoice is paid in full. We reserve the right to remove items that are not paid for…"

Arrive there with a team with step ladders and get paid!

That is a lot of shrinking for M7 series. Fact!

Thats even worst than a M4 shrink which is usually 1mm after 3-5 years.

As for the cracks, I’ve noticed after 18 months from installation the same cracks (around 2 to 3mm) with Metamark White M7 on my VW Sharan. BUT: the cracks are on the bonnet.
Rest of the car with M7 is ok. (Vertical positions)
10 days in Alps, car covered in snow. Snow melts during day, -20 during night. My bonnet failed.
Every brand vinyl will fail on a bonnet (horizontal) position in snowy/ icy conditions.

I get few fails with M7 above windshield of vans where snow is accumulating, freezing and pushing vinyl around.

Out of interest: can you send a photo so we can see the whole truck and the area affected? (You can blur the client logo and send google image if you don’t want to show client)

From what I’m reading looks like the “remover” is not penetrating well enough to get to the main vinyl.

But why dont you try heat gun, wall paper remover?

    when its snowing 😆
    quote Phill Fenton:

Most manufacturers would recommend application temperatures of 8 degrees or higher but you can get away with applying in a lower temperature by using a hot air gun to warm the panel before hand. If the tape wont come off without the lettering lifting apply more heat with the hot air gun. Remember, even if the air temperature is 0 degrees a metal panel will quickly warm up and retain it’s heat for some time if there is a heat source. Even the sun shining on a panel can be enough to warm it even when the outdoor temperature is cold. Best to use your hand to feel the panel first – if it’s cold to the touch (and likely damp) you are probably wasting your time

I better stop moaning and get onto it then! Thanks!

I think about this regularly but always comes down to dust and doing what I do best. Still outsourcing this kind of work. Best results have always been diamond polish with little flame polish to get rid of the sharp dimond polished edge/ corner.

    Good evening all,

I have exactly the same thing bothering me Martyn. Like yourself I never get big print jobs. I don’t know how to offer discount on more m2. I simply calculate the m2 x my m2 price, no discount if more meters. In a way my business is optimised to make better money on small jobs and I guess this answers my question in a way.

I know pricing is sensitive subject on the forum, but can I ask the question using imaginary price.

If you charge 1 £ for 1m2 for the first meter.
How much discount you offer on the:

    Second meter?
    5m?
    10m?
    20m?
    50?

% price discount advice from the 1£ for the first meter or any other simplification of discounting is much appreciated.

    Many thanks.

    Good day folks.
    Another gradient effect problem.

I’m printing with FlexiPRINT SE Mutoh Edition – File made in Adobe Illustrator.

I print the file. I get the colours required. But I get a sharp line in the gradient.

    – When I rasterise. I get good gradient. But the colours change.

    • Durability: 4 years (gloss), 5 years (matte)
    • Designed for short to mid-term applications

Personally, I would like to use 7 year vinyl on outdoor stuff. On a flat panel, the worst that can happen, can shrink 1mm on the edge.

Knowing you and the materials you use, I won’t be using this vinyl.

I would only be using this vinyl for a indoor job.
