MemberNovember 8, 2023 at 9:23 am in reply to: Pulling my hair out installing window graphicsAs others have said, if applied wet, especially when cold best to leave overnight. When removing the application tape we always squeegie back over it again just before removing and then tear in strips as pulling it all off in one whole sheet there’s a lot of force needed and more chance of pulling the frosting off. The adhesive on the application tape is more aggressive than the the adhesive on the cold glass !

We only had a VP540 at the time (!) Got the spec and designs of what the company wanted etc. Due to the size we got another professional wrapping company to give us a trade quote with us going to add on our bit. Total I think in the end was £24000 (I think we were going to make almost £4k for subbing it out). Submitted our quote which I believe was the best price however the train company put a stop to us doing it as we weren’t approved by them and they went with a company who specialises in that type of thing and who were already approved. Annoying but that’s how it goes so be mindful that although the company might want you to do it the train owner posibly not.

If applying wet or dry (especially to external glass as it gets quite cold and condensates) it’s worth removing the application tape in strips to avoid stressing and pulling the frosting back from the window. Just my two penn’orth worth anyway !

Thanks for taking the time to reply Colin. Good to hear the reports on the 360 ! Will keep an eye out for one at a sensible price and go from there. Best regards

MemberSeptember 6, 2021 at 7:20 pm in reply to: How would you approach this request?Hi Jean. We’ve literally just finished doing a school today. 200m of panels. Each panel 3.2m x 600-800mm.
Using a new base material over an old one causes a world of pain (since Grenfell) and anything need to be fire rated and Building Control involved. No manufacturers will give you any guarantees of anything though – even the fire rated material. No one will take any responsibility these days
We ended up using the same panels and vinyling straight over them dry. No application tape. The entire windows in our case were replaced and we just did the facia (Avery 800 Matt grey).
Basically you have 2 options really. Vinyl the panels in situ and put a bead of grey sealant around the edge in case of shrinkage (alternatively if you’re hands on you can remove each panel and vinyl it all to the edges – that way you won’t need to put a bead round.
Mask up and spray (as suggested) – again you might need to put a thin sealand bead around
Apologies for the rubbish photo (old phone with scratch screen protector on it !)

Hi Rob.
Cheers for your advice. Yeah when a novice tried to apply in direct sunlight and it causes all sorts of grief !
Finally have a RAL colour (7016 an anthracite grey) so on the hunt for swatches close to this.
A concern is whether to wrap the vinyl around the edges and stick to the back. The board it’s going onto is a 7mm laminate so has sharpe edges. If wrapping it around after a time of expansion and contraction the worry would be it tearing. We have considered routing the edges to remove the sharpeness. If you have any experience of the best way your knowledge is appreciated.
Also considering a vinyl applicator (similar for that used with application tape) given the volume of panels that has to be done but would prefer one that you can tension the rollers slightly as normal ones can cause vinyl to sag when pushing a board through so that’s on the list to try and find too.
Such a simple job but has thrown a few spanners in the mix !

Hi Graham
Thanks for your reply. Yes have already requested a quote and some samples having seen these on the Avery website through Allprint supplies.
Will see what they come back with !
Cheers

Hi Karen
Just been in touch with Avery and they do a vinyl specifically for buildings so we’ll see what they come back with price wise. Cast would have the longevity we need but is so floppy to use without application tape. There’s about 200m+ so needs to be fairly user friendly !

Not sure if Mimaki offer their own RIP as I’ve only really used Roland (Versaworks which is free) but naturally with HP you’ll have to factor the cost of this in too which can be fairly expensive and generally pretty much specific to the printer (give or take a model or two). i.e if you buy a RIP for an LP26500 it won’t be suitable for much later models

That looks really nice Philip. Quite difficult to find a customer that’s willing to spend proper money on a sign over there I should imagine. Find it really annoying in the UK sometimes a business will set up and then use just a banner as a shop facia – doesn’t give a good impression.
Yeah hubby and I miss the sunshine and elegance of Valencia. Weren’t so keen on Benidorm though. It’s a bit of a concrete high rise jungle but can imagine it’s a good place for business with British ex pats.
Drop me a line if you want a receptionist (fluent English/native Spanish). NIE already in place ! (goodness knows what hubby would do there though ! – estate agent or DIY stuff)
….and yes your website definitely needs updating (if it’s the one I think it is). Facebook is easier to update but not sure if the Spanish are as into that as other countries
-
Hola Philip
Your Spanish is very good !
From quite a bit of experience with Roland printers it could be several issues. Ribbon cable and or head or main board.
If installing a head it’s always good practice to replace the ribbon cable with new ones anyway. In respect of the dilemma of the machine
Tempted to say buy a second hand head and main board if cheap enough and known to be working but use new cables. This, in theory, should stop it blowing any new head. Might be worth buying a Roland printer and get the Mutoh sorted and sell it once fixed if there’s a market for it in Spain or sell it for parts but from memory it’s quite an old machine now.
Yes we were in Alicante and Valencia for a while and miss it a lot. Do you have a link to what you do please ?
How is business there at the moment ?

MemberFebruary 7, 2020 at 10:00 am in reply to: Changing an SP300 print head, Advice needed please? They’re not too difficult Steve. Just be methodical and patient. The alignment is more of a pain than than fitting the head itself especially poking about between cables on the head fixing screws !
There’s a process of releasing the screws slightly to make adjustments and then re tightening them again.
Be mindful when fitting a new damper ensuring it’s fits squarely onto the manifold spike since these are delicate and can break easily.
Several videos around on youtube etc.
I hope this is of some help -

MemberOctober 19, 2019 at 9:47 pm in reply to: Roland SP540i – All New Parts but Still No Joy.Digiprint are a total nightmare. Basically ruined us due to their behaviour. Really bad experience with their inks and heads. Took months to resolve. Their ‘technical dept’ were rude and incompetent. Finally had enough and wrote a really bad online review. Almost instantly, after months of promises, we had a call from someone high up (name escapes me at the moment) saying if we remove the review they’ve get the stuff out to us and give us some compensation (bit late after almost 4 months without a printer).
To your issue though. Sounds suspiciously like a cracked manifold. Easy to do when pressing the damper onto the spike and difficult to notice. You’ll feel less resistance if it is at fault when you draw ink through the line from the cap. You normally get a new manifold already mounted to the head or you can buy them separately. Could also be a seal not seated correctly on a damper or an air leak somewhere.
Would never push or pull flush through the head. They apparently have delicate membranes inside that damage if too much pressure is used (We’ve actually done this ourselves and blown a head having used a digiprint head flushing kit !) – It was sh*t or bust anyway with one of our heads so didn’t matter too much but too much pressure can spray flush everywhere and short out other heads/components.
Would advise only buy heads from a reputable source though such as Josero etc. A lot of places, if you read the very small print, won’t offer a warranty once the head has been fitted ! Appreciate trying to do it on the cheap (been there and done all that but doesn’t pay long term financially)

MemberOctober 12, 2019 at 3:48 pm in reply to: HP Latex 26500 – 792 Inks to cease April 2020Thinking longer term HP are really shooting themselves in the foot. Potential purchasers of a new (or almost new) machine are going to think to themselves if they aren’t able to purchase consumables after such a short period of time they’ll steer clear of buying HP.
3rd party inks may well be an option but what about service items and optimisers ? Doesn’t really inspire confidence in wanting to buy their product and their ‘green’ credentials aren’t valid if half a tonne of plastic no longer has practicability after just a few years.
It almost seems like their business model is based on domestic home printers rather than large format market.
I reckon they might need a rethink !

MemberOctober 2, 2019 at 6:21 pm in reply to: General thoughts on Jet Best Bulk Ink System? We inherited a Jetbest bulk system when we purchased an SC545 many years ago (having previously used only Roland genuine) and it was great. No issues at all. Colours were bright and vibrant and longevity really good. Were so impressed when we upgraded to an XC540 we went with the same system again.
The savings are massive however they don’t have any guarantees/warranties in place if a head goes down due to their use. Mike at Colour Mill is really helpful though.
Couldn’t/wouldn’t recommend the bulk/cartridge system Digink from DigiPrint Supplies. Caused us a lot of grief !

MemberJune 16, 2019 at 10:29 am in reply to: Digiprint supplies, some feedback please? They used to be really good and helpful. The most recent experiences over the past year or so have been really bad – almost wiping us out. We bought a few DX4 print heads and their own brand ink and immediately we swapped inks from original there was a head issue. Caused no end of grief with their Italian ‘technical’ department blaming us for flushing it incorrectly (we’ve 13 years experience of doing all of this and servicing/changing heads on Rolands) and really being quite blunt and rude. Customer service did apologise for how they were and were told to ignore them
They blamed a manufacturing fault with the print head in the end absolutely refuting the blame of their ink. Promised to send another head out and new ink (just in case). Neither arrived. Chased. Nothing but promises. 3 months this went on with no printer.
Left a really bad Google review and immediately got a response from their MD saying that if I removed/changed the review they’d send the items out straight away and give some compensation (store credit). Always store credit when they cock it up.
Pretty much every occasion of ordering in the past year or so there’s been an issue. Given up with them now
Shame as they used to be really on the ball. Now it just seems like once they’ve got your money they’re not interested.

Hi Myles.
We saw a sample of what these machines can produce and the quality blew us away when they first came out.
I’ve sent an email to HP asking for clarification. It would be a shame if they were however maybe a third party would continue any parts for these. I’m aware DP supplies do some and inks are also available elsewhere.
Probably will be like Saab. Stopped making them but can still get loads of bits !
Thanks

We had issues with a well known Belgium company’s third party inks. Issues occurred instantly after changing and wrecked a new head (also supplied by them a couple of months previously fortunately). They too insisted their ink wasn’t at fault and it must be the head (even though it was used for months before perfectly with originals). Had rude exchanges of emails from their Italian ‘technical dept’ blaming us ! Any excuse to avoid resolving the problem. 3 months it took for them to replace the head and we dumped all their other ink. Basically finished us as a business. They did offer nominal compensation by way of a credit.
Strange how so many third party inks ‘come out of the same factory’ as the originals !!!
We have used another third party ink a couple of times (Jetbest) and found it to work really well without any issues in our experience. Nazdar is supposed to be really good too but not had any experience.
Way way of a recommendation Andy Malcolm has always been a decent and very knowledgeable engineer, again from our experience.

Cool. How’s it going there ? We were in Alicante and Valencia but struggled to make a viable living there. I’m actually from Chile so native language is Spanish but hubby is British.
We’d love to move back there sometime but it’s just a question of figuring out how to make some money !
Damper and cap replacement is pretty underrated and solves a number of issues. Might be worth moving the head over and giving the caps a clean with flush and do a manual clean on the heads (if not done already)
Failing that it might be worth soaking the heads for a while to try and free up any particles of ink. Will keep thinking what else might cause it !
Best regards

The guy was absolutely insistent that he didn’t want the graphics applied directly to the van but to alupanel and this screwed/riveted to the vehicle All the way around (about 500mm high !)
Of course we spent a considerable length of time telling him THE most obvious reason for us not to do this however no amount of rationalisation or common sense would prevail despite serious frowning behind painful disbelief.
So as requested we riveted black, signed alupanel all the way around the van even folding it around the rear corners.
As I sit here typing this I cringe with guilt fueled laughter and bemusement at the thought of when the guy took all the signs off ! A mobile sieve.

First try switching the machine off and then on again. Check the cutting blade isn’t fouling.
Maybe even try a limit initialisation. (had this on our XC 540)Failing that it’s likely to be the scan motor at fault.

We have an XC 540 with 4 new heads and bulk ink system with almost full inks if you’re interested. Much faster than the SP. Comes with a laminator too ! Full details in the Buy and Sell section Peter.

MemberNovember 17, 2018 at 12:54 pm in reply to: Few missing printer nozzles, advice please? The head cleaning kit from Digiprint I’d avoid personally. The internals of a DX head are really delicate and you can easily damage it beyond repair if too much pressure is applied (product of experience as we’ve used one of these before !) Roland don’t recommend that one is used either.
They can and do work but they are a bit of a gamble.
-
There could be several reasons why they’ve done it like this – possibly customer brief and not wanting to bring the background colour up too high. If they really wanted it done like this then it would have been better to change the meat choices into a different colour so the top line is visually connected.
Hubby went for a job interview at a sign company in Ireland once and saw the quality of their work and it was like a sandstorm between the laminate and print. The amount of rubbish between the 2 layers made it 3 dimensional !!
-
I think the biggest faux pas is the guy wearing the Rupert Bear scarf 🙂
-
Would be cool to see the finished result David. (hubby has a Granturismo and considering wrapping it)
-
Brilliant. Thanks Rob. I suppose our only really worry would be if HP decide to stop producing inks etc for it like they did the L26500 printers as the 360 is starting to be getting on a bit relative to newer technology printers. Sounds like it could be a goer though !
